If you could go back in time and change 1 result...

by Hendo » 23 Feb 2022 11:33

... which one would you go for?

Bolton Play-Off Final?
Huddersfield Play-Off Final?
Blackburn (a) to get into Europe?
Birmingham (h) to get into autos?

Or something else?

For me, I think it has to be FA Cup semi v Arsenal. To see Reading in an FA Cup Final has been a dream for as long as I can remember and we might've had a shot against Villa.

Agreed. Villa were awful that year, reckon we'd have won :(

For how it happened probably the Arsenal FA Cup Semi. We were desperately unlucky not to win that game and it was likely the only time we will get that close in our lifetimes.

Bolton. We lost some top players after that game. It was a game we should never have lost. It was a game that broke my heart.

For a one off, definitely the Arsenal game.

For the good of the club, the Huddersfield play off final.

I'll probably go the Swansea playoff final. We'd have got promoted again under the ownership of Madejski who probably wouldn't have sold to Zingarevich. We'd have won a playoff final under McDermott who would have kept his job and the whole club would be different today. And we'd have won a playoff final.

Jaap Stam in the Premier League would have been dire, not sure the season would have ended too well. Obviously parachute payments would have helped so I get your point financially.

We would have probably broken Derby's record.

+1

I still remember the shock of seeing the ball squirm under Feds.
Total disbelief after such an incredible display.
Michael Hector was immense that day.
I was almost parallel to that goal line; which was wonderful earlier when GMac’s goal crossed the line.

A great day out; almost a truly wonderful one.

Huddersfield…..
The entire momentum shifted when Liam Moore missed.
If he’d have scored that, the pressure on Huddersfield would have been overwhelming.

Totally agree; we genuinely could have won the FA Cup that year; and would we have qualified for Europe too?

I'd have been intrigued to see who we would have brought in, it was certainly a unique style of play that may well have kept us up, but it would have taken a fair few signings to make us competent. Other than the likes of Williams, Swift and Moore, I'm not sure how many others could have held their own at that level really, it would have taken 5/6 good signings that improved us for us to be good enough. It certainly would have been interesting though.

Either of the 2-0 home defeats to Bolton or Fulham in 2007/08. A draw in either would have kept us up.

Arsenal 2015 for the genuine chance to have won the FA Cup
or
Blackburn (a) 2007 for the win to give us a European tour

Neither of which we will likely have the opportunity to see again

That Blackburn game in 2007 is one of the best games I've ever been to.

Derby 0 Reading 4, we needed to win 7-0 to stay up, the rams were so bad then we could easily have done it.

Yeah, one of those for me too. For us to surrender our top flight status so easily that season was awful when you look back at the campaigns that the likes of Wigan, Swansea and Southampton put together over the years.

Bolton POF without a doubt. Nothing hit harder before or since.

Definitely losing to Fulham in 07/08. We had a good enough squad to stay in the top league for several years and we have never really recovered from that relegation since.
