NathStPaul They've already rotted for a few years, they are now officially rotten and need to be rebuilt.

rotting away in 2nd & 3rd

United have been terrible this year but replacing 2 or 3 players could make a massive difference i.e. to being less shit

May take a while to get back to competing though

Didn’t Liverpool spend quite a lot of their barren years in the top 4 still?

They've won one title in 32 years, prolly did well in the cups as they'd be out of the running for the league fairly early doors (but would have to look it up)

Liverpool are a good example of how adding Suarez, coupled with Sturridge having a purple patch, Sterling breaking through from the academy etc can completely revitalize a team.

One Stevie G slip away from winning the title in 2012/14

In the 29 years of PL so far they finished 4th or better 18 times, so yeah, I was right.

Don't think they finished below 8th. Not bad given the league was a lot more competitive the longer ago it was. Less of this ridiculous runaway top couple and massive winning points hauls.

I think spending a fortune is the worst thing they can do. They don't necessarily need stars, they need a team. If I were their sporting director I would be indentifying the best players at the lesser Premier League teams who work hard and can make United more solid. A few names who would fit this bill are the likes of James Tarkowski, James Ward-Prowse, Yves Bissouma, Ruben Neves, Tyrick Mitchell. Build the base and then look to bring in a star striker. It is essential they bring in the sort of players who will run through brick walls for the club.

You mean someone like ... Aaron Wan-Bisaka - he fits exactly that profile
McTominay would run through brick walls, but is just not good enough for a top 4 side (to get some sort of idea, which other team in the top 6 would he get into)
Is Tarkowski really an upgrade on Maguire or even Lindelof ? I guess that's debatable

I do get where you're going with the idea, but I don't think the Man Utd fans are going to settle for anything other than competing for the title. Competing to finish in the top 4 is accepting failure, that's the way I think those fans would look at it

Tarkowski is a better and more consistent defender than Maguire imo. They need a few steady Eddie's in their squad like Tarkowski. Whilst you can debate whether or not he is an upgrade on Maguire, it can't be debated he is an upgrade on Bailly and Jones. They have a massive lack of depth and a guy like Tarkowski coming in to cover Varane and Maguire can only be a good thing.

Don't agree on their supporters demanding a league winning side, they are aware that a rebuild is needed and I think as long as they can see things going in the right direction then they will be relatively patient.

Think their main focus has to be the midfield. Maguire isn’t playing well in particular but there’s so much pressure on the defence given how easily their midfield is bypassed

Elneny only started his third game all season on Saturday and along with Xhaka, far outperformed the United midfield three

Depends on how United is going to play. Maguire is way too slow to play a high line so the rest of the team can push up. They need a defender with pace. McFred wouldn't get in most prem midfields.

United fans would want to be competing by year three of manager's reign.

the combined Arsenal midfield two had double the passes of Utd's

United also now desperately needs a new striker...Mason, Cavani, Martial not available/gone/injured/etc Rashford has been terrible

Had you got Poch in I think you may have got Harry Kane.

Agree that is the area United have to spend big money on. They should do all they can to get Osimhen away from Napoli, really good player.

Bit of an optimistic shout but I’d be interested to see how Mitrovic would do at a bigger club

Obviously not as a starting striker but as a rotation striker. Hard to grasp his actual ability as a Prem striker given how poor Fulham are in the Prem (certainly under Parker anyway). 41 goals in 41 games is incredible

I don't think the Premier League is direct enough for him, there is less urgency to get the ball up top. Great finisher but I just can't see him getting the freedom he does in the Championship. Can certainly see him scoring more than he did in his previous Premier League season though.

Ever since he got involved in politics he hasn't had his head In football the slightest bit

At least do it after you've retired, must be absolutely exhausting

Said for a while now that Mata has been underused by United for a couple of seasons now. Obviously a one off game against Brentford isn’t entirely justification for it (although they have been on good form recently) but not sure how much a coincidence it is that United put in one of their best performances (possibly their best) in the one game he’s started

He is of course physically slow but makes up for it with a quicker brain than the rest of the United squad with his touch and movement. Not sure how much use he’d have been against top teams but in games like tonight, perhaps he’s shown he’s been unlucky to feature so little with such mediocre performance from Rashford and co
