Whore Jackie Still not sure Keïta is worth the £50m or so, but he's certainly not terrible. Same with Ox for £34m. But since spunking £42m on Benteke seven years ago, they really haven't put a foot wrong. Their 'big money' moves have all worked out, which is the impressive bit.

Can the same not be said about Man City? Can’t think of any poor recruits in recent years.

Even Grealish has been decent enough (not £100m decent enough but certainly not a duff like critics love to suggest) and, like most Pep signings will probably be much better in his 2nd season.

If you put Fred in the Liverpool or City squad, he could probably do the job as well as Ox, Keita etc

They have a system that they have spent a couple of years recruiting players into

United have changed styles with every manager and also bought shiny object players who can sell shirts rather than build a team

The one ray of hope for Liverpool is not Newcastle today at City but City's remaining game away at Wolves.
Wolves are an awkward team to play against .

Clutching a straws a bit and assuming that Liverpool win the rest of their games which is not a gimme- they have been very, very good this season but can sometimes still struggle, as per last night, to break down a packed defence (22 shots to 8).

I always felt that talk of the greatest team ever (why do the media get carried away with what might be rather than with what happens?) was a bit premature but this team and City are going to take some catching in the next few years.

I find both Liverpool and City really good to watch, although they are quite different in their approach.

There’s a strong case for either to be currently the best around.

GOAT, not so easy to argue. That’s generally something that’s ‘earned’ by history rather than current affairs

What has seperated City from a clean sweep this season is a striker. With Haarland next season they are gonna be some team.

He’s forty already and they don’t need a centre back

Think West Ham are more likely to stop City than Wolves especially with them not having a final to focus on now and then having a sniff at 6th (EL rather than the Conference League)

With Stones, Walker and Diaz all out for the season, City’s defence doesn’t look entirely convincing but with Wolves’ blunt nature in attack (top scorer on just 6 goals!) I don’t see them capitalising whereas West Ham have more offensively

Even discounting his off-the-field misdemeanours, not sure Mendy has ever merited the £52m they spent. Ake is a pretty expensive fourth-choice (or fifth-choice judging by yesterday) centre-back. Other than that, they've been equally good and most do markedly improve in the second year under Pep.

Hmm, I did think "what about Mendy?" after I'd posted but then moved on.

TBH I didn't realise he cost £52m.... At that cost he's definitely one to add to the list; can ping a decent cross in but other than that he looks like a heart-in-mouth lability most of the time. Wouldn't look out of place in Man Utd's team (which says it all I guess).

Liverpool have been getting results and playing well, but they have been carrying a couple of attacking 'problems' for a while in terms of the goalscoring form of Salah (just 7 in 21 since AFCON), and Jota's form having fallen away too (similar goal stats this year). Not in itself an issue given Diaz and Mane and Firmino and the rest, but the problem for Klopp is that ideally he'd rotate tonight at Villa ahead of the FA Cup final at the weekend. Tonight obviously a must-win, I wonder if it's actually a slightly weakened side at Wembley instead.

Diaz is an absolute quality player

And I am always surprised to see how good Jota is at headers and how much power he gets on them despite being so small

I wonder if Firmino will look to leave soon. Seems to have become the firm back up to whatever front 3 they put out. Still 30, could get a move to another very good club if he wanted to be a regular starter

Same could be said for a fair amount of players in the squad, Gomez, Minamino, Chamberlain (Klopp has finally realised he isn’t very good any more)

Jones/Elliott are interesting ones - haven’t really kicked on this season because of the depth there, along with Carvalho, perhaps Klopp will look at loaning at least one out
