Rashford in hitting target shock!!!!!!

So England fans would you take Alexander Arnold to the World Cup? He is just so poor at defending.

As a wing back as part of a back 5, yes.

No but that's the only way I'd take him as it stands.

TAA has to move into midfield

He is so exposed defensively.

Reece James delivery is not far short of TAA and he can definitely defend

For me he’s the obvious England choice

Reece James wasn't looking that good against Leeds at the weekend. But unless Southgate goes back to playing three at the back he's not going to risk TAA's defensive weaknesses and at the moment rightly so.

I thought Carragher was a bit over the top in his criticism of TAA-Gomez was the weaker link last night and I couldn't get why he pulled out of tackles so much.

It was Man Utd.'s cup final and, particularly in the first half played as if it was.

Finally somebody there has realised that Maguire and Shaw are no good and with Ronaldo in the side they lack pace.
In so much as Carragher went OTT about TAA I think Neville went OTT in over-praising so many of the Man Utd.'s players-perhaps it was just relief that his team turned up for once.

A fair result even if Liverpool dominated possession-without Thiago the creativity was below standard however young Elliott is getting valuable experience for the future and doesn't look out of place at that level.

From an England perspective I think we have problems in both full-back positions and in the centre.
IMHO Trippier, Walker, Shaw, Maguire and Stones are all defensively suspect and both Mings and Coady , for differing reasons, might not be up to scratch either.

We do however have 3 decent keepers even if I disagree with Southgate in believing that Pope is the best of them.

Yep

I would take him to play in games where we’re expecting to be attacking a lot and NOT play in games where we’re likely to be under some pressure

Probably. At least he can get a good cross in 1st time, without stopping and checking back, something which no-one else seems capable of.

Skill levels are so high these days, and pitches so good, yet crossing on the run seems to be going out of the game. Yes Messrs Grealish, Sterling, Saka, Sancho et al, I'm looking at you.

TAA isn't the perfect full back, but his strengths far outweigh his weaknesses imo

Without a doubt. His defending, in general terms, isn't even that poor, just has some bad days. It's also not his strength either and gets "caught out of position" because of where he is told to play, not because he gets caught out. 100% goes to the World Cup for me, world class going forward.

Consequence of the current trend to play left footed wide players on the right and right footed wide players on the left? Sure its fine when they cut inside and twat one in to the top corner from 25 yards out with their good foot but not quite so good when you need a decent cross hit on the run with their weaker one.

Devil's advocate, but it should be easier to whip in a decent cross on your wrong foot than it is to step inside and fire in a decent shot on it.

Crossing is also less valuable with a lot of teams playing one up front. Getting early ball in from running down the wing will just give you one target against two or three defenders. Which makes it easier to defend against. With a lot of No 10s not really strong in the air even if they get in there.

It is a loss to the game though imo.

A lot of teams these days will not put crosses in from wider areas as that's not where the most goals come from anymore, probably a consequence of a lot of teams playing with one forward as well as more creative players. Butt most teams would prefer to get in the space between the centre back and corresponding full back and go for a shot, cut back etc from there.

Lee Johnson does a good little piece about it on the Coaches Voice how he wanted his then Bristol City side to "upgrade" his sides quality of chances by getting into those areas more often, rather than whack a ball in from a wider position, outside the box.
