windermereROYAL Goodness knows how much we are paying these guys with Moore still on the books with a couple more still expected to come in.

We’re either paying them less than £16 million in total or we’re going to find those 12 points turning negative…,
Although as Bowen said it isn’t actually possible for us to exceed the wage cap .

Yeah precisely, unless the EFL completely drop the ball, they stopped us signing Naby Sarr for a month because it would have taken us slightly over our wage budget after all.

Although I’ve still not worked out how they take bonus payments into account , they should be included in the £16 million but how you budget for them is hard to grasp given how variable they are.

Stranded So - if I am getting this correct then the permitted players are as follows:

GKs

Lumley
Bouzanis

DEF

Holmes
Hutchinson
McIntyre
Dann
Yiadom
Guinness-Walker
Rahman
Sarr
Moore

MID

Hendrick
Ince
Ejaria
Fornah
Loum
Hoilett

ATT

Joao
Long
Meite
Azeez

I'm not sure if Tetek counts as he is under 21. If he does then that makes 22 players.

So if goes out on loan, we still actually have 4 spots that we could fill - budget restrictions allowing. Am probably missing someone though as sure Ince said we had 3 spots left, so 2 now and 3 if Tetek moves out.

Not sure Bolzano, NGW nor a Fornah will count as permitted players but think Tetek does. Need 3 plus starts at Championship level or above (or equivalent)

Players usually have performance bonuses of some sort, even if as a small element of their contract. Promotion particularly.

Be interesting to know if the FL are constraining us by the maximum we could possibly pay out including bonuses... win, goal, clean sheet & promotion for example, or just basic, or some expected level of bonus.

If it's the former, we could find shit performance in the first half of the season frees up enough space in untriggered bonus payments to sign someone extra in January.

Individual bonuses are included in the Salary budget calculation, so form part of the 16m. Squad bonuses are not. So promotion bonus would definitely not be incuded as you would expect that to be a squad bonus.

I guess we could have got a bit cute and made as many bonuses squad wide as possible. Such as any player playing in a defence that keeps a clean sheet gets X, a goalscorer gets Y - therefore moving it out of the playing budget side of things.

Be hard to take account of goal bonuses, in theory there's enough game time to score thousands. And teams have been known to score over 100, with individuals up to the low 40s.

Currently players get bonuses for each appearance, the size of the bonus increases depending on league position.
A sub who comes on gets a bonus, a sub that doesn't Come on gets a bonus. There are win bonuses.
Whether some or all are seen as individual bonuses or not it’s a complex set of permutations that all feed in to a tight budget. You can’t work on paying the maximum possible as that would be unrealistic, but you can’t afford to under budget either.

If the window slams shut this evening, do we think any deals done by Reading will be processed in a timely manner or will they still take up to a week to go through like other deals this summer?

I still think we will always look to get deals done as quickly as possible, but because our transfers for free agents are not time-bound, I don't think it will be as much a mad rush to get all the paperwork done like what other clubs will be doing today.

Like any transfer though, the sooner the better for me, particularly as some players might not be quite up to speed yet either.

At the moment I’d say that the work needed on the squad in January is,

1. Extend Andy Carroll agreement
2. Either get Moore back to the player he once was or get him shifted out
3. Consider early contract termination with Scott Dann

Obvs. still a lot could change before then thouugh

We haven’t seen much of Mbengu yet but he looks like he might have a lot to offer, would be a shame if we’d can’t keep him at least until the end of the season.
I would also hope we have a good idea of what our options are for next season and can start timing players down beyond 2022-3

At this moment, I'd say looking to tie both Mbengue and Carroll down until (at least) the end of the season and getting shut of Moore in whatever way is feasibly possible would be high on the priority list.

Agree trying to terminate Dann's contract would also be beneficial for us and potentially replacing him if we can, but other than that I think we are looking pretty ok, even with a few injuries kicking about the squad as we are pretty well stocked in every area.
