MATCHWATCH : Rotherham United (h)

by Sutekh » 11 Feb 2023 17:53

When : Tuesday, 14th February 2023, 8pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Just what you need after 6 games with no victories, the proverbial banana skin and unlike most seasons Rotherham, though struggling, aren’t looking like nailed on certs for relegation so this is clearly going need more than the run of the mill turning up especially when Rahman gets game after game after game.

This one should be a home banker in theory as Rotherham’s form is 1 win in 11 games in all competitions, a run that includes them being stuffed 4-1 by Ipswich in the FA Cup. Oddly, though, their one win arrived one month ago (14th January) when they mullered Blackburn Rovers 4-0 so they have some ability if you let them get the upper hand (note also that their last away win (which was also their last win anywhere) was by 1-0 at Sheffield United). Rotherham have also drawn their last three games including two successive 0-0 draws at Blackpool and at home to Sheffield United.

As we all know this is just the sort of opponent form that Reading excel in being total turd against. Then there’s the fact the Rotherham signed supposed Reading target Jordan Hugill in January and he is still looking for his first goal for the Millers (so another one of those records you don’t really want Reading to have to defend against). In addition Tariq Fosu-Henry is on loan there from Stoke so will need to keep on top of him again.

The Millers have George Long, Sean Morrison, Tom Eaves, Ben Wright and Bailey Wright sidelined through injury while Reading will have doubts over Tom Holmes and Lucas Joao (knee injury, currently in Portugal for, presumably specialist, treatment), however Ejaria and Moore maybe considered for the game.

This is the first of 3 games in a row against struggling teams (Rotherham, Cardiff and Blackpool) where collecting 7+ points is a realistic target and, if achieved, would pretty much kill off any possibility of the drop, however Ince’s overly negative team selections and highly dodgy substitutions will sadly make all games a level playing field and even winning one of them a real challenge. Really need to drop the awful Rahman (even though Loum’s suspension already solves the “which loanee gets left out conundrum”) and play the better NGW who needs game time/experience and provides a much more positive attacking threat. Also be positive and please start Azeez. Finally, Mr Ince Snr, please stop putting Dann on, seems every time he comes on disaster shortly follows.

Referee

John Busby

Previously

22 Oct 22 > Reading 2-0 Bristol City
19 Feb 22 > Preston North End 2-3 Reading
03 Jan 22 > Reading 2-2 Derby County
29 Sep 21 > Derby County 1-0 Reading

Historically

Reading have a good home record against Rotherham. In the 23 previous league games Rotherham have only won once (3-0 in May 1977) which leaves 15 victories for Reading and 7 draws.

Rotherham have managed just 2 goals in their last 10 visits but those goals were scored in 2 of their last 3 visits.

Reading have also won 5 of the last 6 played at home and, overall, have scored 37 times to Rotherham’s 15.

How to follow the game

  1. Get tickets
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Valentines Day innit. Blokes under pressure to spend time with the other half.

Don't Rotherham start picking up points usual about now?

Lumley (4-3-3)

Yiadom Mbengue Sarr NGW

Hendrick McIntyre Fornah

Ince Long Azeez

Or

Lumley (4-2-3-1)

Yiadom Mbengue Sarr NGW

McIntyre Fornah

Meite Ince Azeez

Long

It would be criminal if we go with these negative tactics at home to Rotherham!! we have to play on the front foot and take the game to them. We cannot afford to go behind and let them shut up shop!!!

If you qualify a “dicking” as a win by 4 or more goals then the last time Reading managed it was by 5-0 at Luton in July 2020. Somehow managing to beat Blackburn by 3-0 is the closest Reading have got to it this season.

This but Long or Azeez for Meite. Think Meite has lost it tbh. Another one who’ll be gone in the summer

Hasn't lost it, just not a centre forward. Another strike against five at the back.

He’s done ok as a Cf before. He hasn’t performed on the wing either. Like the guy and will remember him very fondly but he is a pale shadow of what he was at his best

Hound He’s done ok as a Cf before. He hasn’t performed on the wing either. Like the guy and will remember him very fondly but he is a pale shadow of what he was at his best

He's barely played wide all season because our shape doesn't allow it, maybe twice on the left. Meite has been most effective facing goal and running at people from the right wing. He simply hasn't done that this season.

He's too much of a blunt instrument to play striker. He's not a clever player, he's not great at bringing others into the game, playing back to goal or holding the ball up. Iffy first touch.

We're so terrified of playing with 4 at the back we're crippling our players going forward. Meite and Joao have been our top scorers for about the last 3/4 seasons and we've got nothing out of them because we're playing to their weaknesses not strengths. Meanwhile we have the hard working Carroll and Long who are never going to score many, so it's all on Ince, because we don’t have any other goal scorers.

It's so oxf*rd frustrating that each time a manager comes in, they make a few changes that are positive but they never build on it. Instead they get obsessed with sticking with something that worked for 8 games before it had been properly scouted by the opposition and they refuse to adapt. Our game is so reactionary. We're so frightened of other teams we do nothing to impose our own attempts to win on a game and just hand over the initiative and fold under pressure.

No disrespect to Rotherham but we shouldn't be playing 5 at the back against them.

We should try a 4-2-3-1 with NGW, Holmes, Sarr and Yiadom at the back, Hendrick and Fornah as holding midfielders, Meite, Ince and Azeez playing off of Carroll or João on Tuesday. Take the game to them and aim for an early goal.

Then bring on Long and Hoilett off the bench it we need to change it.

Yes it makes us weaker in defence but we're at home and Rotherham don't score many on the road.

I don't think there's much chance of Ince fielding a back 4, but if he does Sarr should not be in it. We can't have two from two CBs with no pace and the QE2's turning circle. Mbengue has to be one of them.

And NGW as a full back is a risk. His pace and positivity are perfect for wing back, less so fullback. Which makes it all the more ridiculous Rahman is ahead of him at WB.

I really hope we can pick up a few results to hit safety, because I'd very much like to see something like this get tried to close out the season.

......................Lumley
Abrefa, Holmes, Mbengue, NGW
......Hendrick, Loum, Fornah
Azeez.............Ince..............Camara

Just as simple as must win, the result matters more than the performance, although both wouldn't go amiss.

Lumley
Holmes Sarr Mbengue
Yiadom Hendrick McIntyre Rahman
Ince
Carroll Joao

Subs: Bouzanis, NGW, Dann/Moore, Hoilett, Azeez, Fornah, Long/Meite.

Not really sure what we will go for but it could be something like that, but always the potential for Casadei to come in as well as others.

Reiterating, no matter what system we play or who plays where, just take the points and have done with it.

Lumley

Yiadom
Holmes
Mbengue

Hoilett
Fornah
Hendrick
NGW

Ince
Long
Meite

Bouzanis, Abrefa, Sarr, Rahman, Casadei, Azeez, Carroll

Hopefully Ince realises some exuberance and youth can stop the rot of lifeless performances. Would be tempted to give Hendrick a break but he’s our most reliable midfielder and it’s a semi big game for us that we really can’t be losing

Makes you think, with Moore, McIntyre and Dann all supposedly fit, the abundance of CB’s we actually have. Hasten to add, it’s quantity rather than quality
