Sanguine UEFA starts disciplinary action against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus, the remaining teams aligned to the ESL. And rightly so. But I feel like I can already see the future on this, with CAS eventually agreeing with the three that any attempts by UEFA or leagues to punish them for this amounts to restraint of trade.

I guess this will depend on the relevant clauses in the regional FA or UEFA rules that they’ve signed up to.

Looking at Juventus' league position, I guess they won't be too bothered about being banned from The Champions League next season.

New Statement on the Real Madrid website:

FC Barcelona, Juventus FC and Real Madrid CF wish to express their absolute rejection of the insistent coercion that UEFA has been maintaining towards three of the most relevant institutions in the history of football. This alarming attitude constitutes a flagrant breach of the decision of the courts of justice, which have already made a clear statement warning UEFA to refrain from taking any action that could penalise the founding clubs of the Super League while the legal proceedings are ongoing.

Therefore, the opening of disciplinary proceedings by UEFA is incomprehensible and is a direct attack against the rule of law that we, the citizens of the European Union, have democratically built up, while constituting a lack of respect toward the authority of the courts of justice themselves.

From the beginning, the Super League has been promoted with the aim of improving the situation of European football, through permanent dialogue with UEFA and with the objective to increase the interest in the sport and to offer fans the best possible show. This objective has to be achieved in a framework of sustainability and solidarity, especially in a precarious economic situation such as the one many clubs in Europe are currently experiencing.

Instead of exploring ways of modernizing football through open dialogue, UEFA expects us to withdraw the ongoing court proceedings that question their monopoly over European football. Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid, all of them more than a century old, will not accept any form of coercion or intolerable pressure, while they remain strong in their willingness to debate, respectfully and through dialogue, the urgent solutions that football currently needs.

Either we reform football or we will have to watch its inevitable downfall.

Or the short version :

We're f*cked if we lose 'cos we've spent too much money buying our way to success without the means to deal with it.

Now we want to f*ck the rest of football to ensure we survive

The Court of Justice of the European Union will make its first call on whether Uefa’s model for the game is fair, in a case brought about by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus

Once the 'top' teams realise that one or more of them will finish at the bottom, this'll be dead in the water

Can you imagine ? Juve, Barca & Real getting relegated ?

You missed the bit in there where the clubs control the rules and can change them as needed.

Probably worth mentioning on this thread that there was a cracking bit on Popbitch this week about how Todd Boehly was happy to spend as much money as has because Chelsea were guaranteed CL qualification every year, someone had to take him to one side and point out that wasn't actually the case and this season there was a decent shout they might not make it at all

There is another deluded Yank new owner down here.
He has GUARANTEED that Bournemouth won't be relegated this season and promised that within 5-6 years they will be competing in Europe.
Since he made his statements they haven't won a game.

He did also say that he would invest in new players in this transfer window and, fair play to him, he splashed out somewhere between £40-£60 million.
Add that to the £100 million that he spent buying the club and he might have to wait a while (not so good for a 78 year old) to see a return on his money.

Wasn't there the legend about when the Venky's bought Blackburn all those Years ago that they didn't realise that there was relegation in the football pyramid, and that Blackburn could be relegated from the Premier League?

No Premier League team can join it; they signed a charter stating that;

"We are collectively committed to the Premier League and recognise our responsibility to support it. We will not engage in the creation of new competition formats outside of the Premier League's rules"

UEFA won't sanction it, which will mean that any player playing for any club which did participate in it would be ineligible to play for their National teams in tournaments such as the European Championships and the World Cup.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus will continue to flog this dead horse for all their worth but it has zero chance of actually happening.

If there’s gazillions available, why would they be at all interested in what UEFA or FIFA think
And LIV Golf has shown that there’ll be enough players seduced by the money to do it

That actually makes it, from their point of view, the ideal time to resurrect this, with UEFA knowing the 2024 Euros would be the first thing impacted by a loss of star players.

Qualifying for which starts next Month............

I genuinely think that, outside the original 3 rebel clubs (who everybody knows are only doing this to try and ensure they generate as much cash as possible for themselves and who don't give a crap about anyone else) that virtually no other club (bar a few in Italy and Spain) will touch it with a bargepole.

If you get turned on by the idea of watching Valencia playing Breschia on a Wednesday night, then crack on.

There are a lot of 'new' owners who probably don't give a toss about national leagues, and just think in terms of money.

If those three win in court, I would expect this to happen.

Fans of the tops sides will angrily moan that they don't want it, but thos protests will be about as successful as the Man Utd fans' boycott of Old Trafford since the Glazers took over. They'll just on the bandwagon pretty quickly.

Sadly, I think you could well be right, but as I said earlier, the Premier League teams have signed away their rights to join any such Super League and the owners of those Premier League clubs will have to counterbalance the promised riches of this venture with the very real riches of the Premier League which they would have to forego.

if PL clubs were found to be trying to join a ESL now there would be much less protest from fans. I personally would be quite happy for them to join a ESL as long as they had to leave the PL to do so

Yeah the latter won't happen - it is part of the proposal that they stay in their domestic competitions - though, whether they would end up essentially having 2 squads is unclear.

At the moment, it just seems like a move to expand the CL and ensure European football for the top clubs and also ensure that the majority of revenue earned goes to those clubs rather than UEFA.

There's an even funnier story about a star international player who signed for a provincial 2nd tier club in another country after seeing a video of them playing in a cup final at the national stadium and thinking it was their home ground.
