Sounds like you're supporting the wrong club already. I've lived in countries full of glory supporters, China is one such, I doubt most people know my city has two teams in the top two divisions, one owned by Man City, they all wear European shirts, saw a Saka shirt yesterday, Real Madrid have loads of shirts. Even in Spain, so many people who live in "proper" Spain support Real or Barca. When I lived there people I knew would celebrate Real winning, and pretend they didn't care when they lost.

Not much sense of achievement there.

Thanks for the lecture but I am hardly a glory hunter-just bemoaning the twist of fate that meant me growing up in a particular town saddling me with a specific team for life and after following us through some thick but mainly thin for nearly 70 years would prefer not to be in the 3rd or 4th divisions again.

I reckon that I have been to nearly 2000 Reading games ( plus around 100 Liverpool games) and is it so bad to want to watch us playing at one of the better levels and watching better players from both sides.?

If you want to watch top class football, go be a glory supporter, it's easy. If you want to follow a club through thick and thin, then support someone else.

Choices, choices.

I think you are confusing things here.

I get my fix of watching the better football on TV but I am a season-ticket holding long-standing Reading supporter.
What is so wrong in wanting my team to be doing well and playing at either the top or 2nd level of English football?
Are you deliriously happy that we might be back in the 3rd division next season just to say that you are some kind of loyal supporter?

IMHO there is not much wrong in wanting the best for your club..

I want the best for my club, but I also want to entertained. Barring the 106 point season and the first Prem season, the most enjoyable season were those back in the third tier.

I am looking forward to it, but I also won't be disappointed if we stay up.

My son on the other hand is struggling to come to terms with our impending relegation, as in his short life he only seen us be in the top two divisions.

You'll also have a short trip to watch us at Adams Park I assume?

Which years are we talking about?

98/99 and 99/00 were both poor seasons.

88-94 wasn't a barrel of laughs until we got promoted.

I could say I enjoyed that time more, but that's more to do with it still be relatively new and exciting, rather than being jaded with a "seen it all before" feeling that I have now.

No I won't, the Completely-Suzuki Stadium will be my closest from August, or Whaddon Road to the traditionalists.....haven't lived near Adams Park since 2006.

I did say enjoyable, not successful. Much more fun. The whole experience, not just the football on the pitch.

Deffo agree with the "more fun" bit.
Back in the day,
Mrs announces on Friday night that she's going shopping with her mum on Saturday
Me, rock up at EP Sat am, ask Colin if any spare seats on the coach, pay on the gate the other end. All done on a whim.
Some of the football was great, too.
I can honestly say that IMHO very, very few Reading teams were better to watch than the one in the McGhee/Lee regime.
When that team "clicked" it was like watching the Harlem Globetrotters, the oppo couldn't get near the ball.

Tell him it needs to happen to maximise the enjoyment he’ll get when Reading do finally win another game.

Night out in Manchester and Stockport is a pretty decent place these days.

Can do that when going away to someone like Bolton away anyway

Going into league one doesn't guarantee we'll see more entertainment. Not sure why anyone assumes all of a sudden games will be so fun again

I tried to let him down gently at the play off final against Huddersfield, he was 10 at the time. As soon as it went to penalties I just said to him " look, we've had a nice day out, the football wasn't good, but we never win shoot outs"....He still cried.

I'm still trying to convince him League One will be fun. We'll still have our season tickets despite moving away and we'll try to get to some more away games....might even get to stand on some terracing......is there any left?

I am fairly certain even if you were being sucked off by 150 hot porn stars at the same time you wouldn't find it fun.

You have to wonder why some people follow football if it makes them so miserable.

It's a choice, fellas. No-one is forcing you.

Winston Biscuit Which teams are people most looking to playing/travelling to if we go down?

None have been to most and they are complete dog holes. Only a couple of local derbies interest me. Even then with a completely new team made up of second rate players academy donkey’s and loans from championship club’s. When we go into administration and receive are 10 point deduction League two beckons. Will you have the same excitement about going to Barrow?

Sigh.

And why will we be going into administration, and how does that help anyone?

You are right that adminitration would not do the owner any good. But, remember that the loss allowed is less in the third tier than the Championship, therefore as the club's revenue will be less than now, Dai would have to put more funds in to keep us afloat, which will mean more debts and a possible points deduction (followed by relegation?). he may well be tempted to withdraw his finical support at any time and just let the club fold. That could well save him paying out millions so it would be the cheaper way.
