Blackett - Overrated, just because he came through at Man Utd does not make you a good footballer. I must say though he was mostly played at LB when he was really a central defender.
Guthrie - Same as above, Liverpool instead of Man U

Underrated - HRK, McCarthy, Pearce, Obita (yes, all academy products but still not appreciated enough IMO)

Overrated: Tom McIntyre, Michael Hector, Joe Gamble.

Underrated: Scott Taylor, Jay Tabb, Lee Nogan

McIntyre and Hector are decent players, but are often talked about as being far more important than they would be if they hadn't come out of the youth team. Gamble was one of those expected to be good for what felt like forever, and then he just vanished.

Taylor, Tabb and Nogan all feel like they weren't appreciated enough at the time for what they did for the team, being overshadowed by higher profile players.

Agree on Blackett, I thought he was pants as a LB. The only reason I wouldn't say he was overrated is simply because I've always thought on him as really poor and never really rated.

Jay Tabb was underrated, probably underused a little bit actually, but there was good competition at the time and different types of players who were important.

I thought Leigertwood was underrated personally. Think he did a lot of the unnoticed work in our midfield, but also feel like he's been overshadowed by the likes of Sidwell, Harper, Karacan etc over the years as well, probably because he didn't didn't move higher and/or wasn't an academy product.

So I get that having controversial views is the point of the thread (props to the people who have noticed that rather than just declaring players everyone hates are overrated), but in what universe has Legs been overshadowed by Karacan?

Multiple people in this thread have said that they thought Karacan was shit.

Only time Legs didn't get appreciated was in the PL, when half the fanbase lined up to declare that Jay Tabb was a better player despite him constantly getting bullied off the ball.

And on that note...

Overrated: Jay Tabb. Fine player, better than Hayden Mullins, but not quite as good as Karacan, let alone Leigertwood or Guthrie. Hard working, usually professional, and able to put in a shift almost anywhere, but nothing more than that.

Underrated: Tyler Blackett. One of the best crossers we've had, sometimes prone to defensive lapses but fundamentally a competent player who suffered because we had three left backs of very similar quality.

Because he came through the academy, so people assumed he was better than he was. Still a good player in his own right, but Karacan was overrated and was liked by a lot of the fanbase during his playing days. I get if other people have pointed it out now.

It never seemed as if Leigertwood got as much attention as Karacan during their playing days though. Might be just from what I've seen though, it'll be different for everyone.

Because he came through the academy, so people assumed he was better than he was.

Yeah nah, not having that. People didn't "assume" he was good, people saw that he was good. He proved his worth on the pitch. Otherwise everyone would be talking about how Tom Hateley was a good player.

Our fanbase is very quick to knock a player just for being from the academy, there's a major bias against academy products.

No they aren't. Academy products get a huge amount of slack.

The GOAT

Was he the one who crossed it in for the winning goal against Sheffield United, or was that Sekou Baradji?

Not sure Upson was underrated, remember Pardew saying at the end of his loan that he would go on and get England caps, certainly one of the most dominant CBs I’ve ever seen play for us.

I tend to think Cureton was underrated as his all round game was a bit lacking but I’ve never seen a more natural finisher in my life.

Baradji.

Obinna didn't really do anything notable.

No they aren't. Academy products get a huge amount of slack.

There are still people who think Tom McIntyre and Tom Holmes aren't good enough for the Championship. People wrote Southwood off very quickly despite him being comfortably better than Lumley. Some people still say that they didn't rate Richards until Paunovic came in. Heck two people in this thread have suggested Jem Karacan wasn't good enough for the Championship.

People also have unrealistic expectations for when a player should be ready for the first team. If you're 20 and haven't broken in then people will start to write you off.

It's a pattern we see time and time again where people just assume our academy players are shit. Of course there are some people who go the other way and assume every youngster must be good enough, but generally the pattern is holding them to a higher standard.

'Good enough for the Championship' is quite a wide category though. Do we mean good enough to playing in a promotion chasing side, or good enough for a team that can hang on in the league? There's a big difference between the quality of players at Leeds and Rotherham. Other than Richards, none of the players you listed were good enough for the former.

Possibly, based on the fact we never gave him a chance, the most underrated player was possibly Michael Antonio.

Southwood isn't better than Lumley though and, to be fair, has never proven anything to the contrary either in my opinion. He had a purple patch of about 5/6 games when the team was in good form last season, other than that he's been pretty poor for us anyway. If anything, that proves what we're saying, fans can be a lot more lenient towards academy players.

A lot of the time if you're 20 year old and not breaking into the first team at the club, then you probably aren't (seen as) good enough yet. It might be down to the players a lot of these decisions as to why they move. They may want first team football elsewhere which is why they move on, it might not just necessarily be because the club view them as not good enough.

Yeah, agree.

He routinely gets voted as one of our best ever loan players, even though he was only here for 3 months.
