Mbengue Confimred

Excellent news in my opinion. Bags of potential and is a very popular member of the squad by all accounts.

From OS

We are delighted to announce that 21-year-old defender Amadou Mbengue has agreed a new two-year contract with Reading Football Club.

The paperwork was signed this week and now the process is subject to the normal ratification procedures from the relevant football authorities, as well as receipt of a new working visa.

Four days after first joining the Royals back in September 2022, he had his first taste of competitive football in England when he replaced Junior Hoilett – and helped us see out a win for the closing minutes in Wigan.

His maiden start came away in Swansea the following month and then, in December, his first goal in professional football proved to be decisive as a deft header at home against Coventry harnessed three points for the Royals.

A fortnight after agreeing an extension in January, Mbengue’s second Reading goal came against Manchester United in the FA Cup, making him the first Royal since Jobi McAnuff – almost a decade earlier – to find the Old Trafford net.

Amadou made a total of 19(+9) appearances in a Reading shirt since departing Metz last summer; his Royals form also provided the platform to get an international call-up, and he made his Senegal Under-23 debut in March 2023.

And now, as we continue to build our squad for 2023-24, we are delighted that Amadou has agreed to stay in RG2 – and that he’ll be wearing the blue and white hoops again in the coming year!

Head of Football Operations, Mark Bowen, said: “Amadou arrived with us less than a year ago – when he first walked in the building he didn't know much English and didn't have a lot of first-team football behind him. But he quickly showed his value on the pitch, and his unrelenting enthusiasm and eagerness to work and learn made him a real asset towards the culture that we want to build.

“Amongst undoubted interest from a number of Championship clubs, I am delighted that he has chosen to stay and be part of us and Rubén’s project at Reading! And I am excited to see him continue to grow as a player and a person with us.”

Fantastic! He was one of our best players last season and was progressing really well throughout the season. He'll certainly help improve our defence.

Fantastic news.

Great news.

Hope to see him forge an excellent and long running partnership with McIntyre/Holmes.

That makes us pretty strong at CB now imo.

I saw Tmac talk about it. Someone said 'cheers' when they were on tour or something and Amadou got confused, thought they'd said 'cheese', then like all these kinds of nicknames it just went from there.

I hope you can rest easy now.

In all seriousness, he is nicknamed cheeseburger because he makes you want to spaff your sesame seeds all over his buns.
