Clyde1998
Hound Would say prob not a lot of difference tbh. Meite was a different player after injury. Joao was quality but only ever in spurts and couldn’t be arsed by the end

Ince certainly

Not sure what else we’ve lost that could have been classed as quality? Jeff? Moore? Baba?

Tbf, when Moore played briefly last season he did look another level to our other centre-backs. Can't really argue we've lost Moore though, given he didn't play for most of the past few seasons.

That said, even if we've lost players who are technically and physically better than what we've got now/will bring in, the mentality of the players will make a major impact on whether they're actually going to perform well for us: I'd rather have a player of the quality of an average League One player who'll run through a brick wall for us than a world class player who only bothers to show up once every few months, as the former will probably get you more points over a season. Joao and Ince are certainly players I'm not bothered about losing, as their mentality is really not what we need - even if they're top Championship players on their day.

The net effect in the squad, as you point out, is probably not a lot of difference - Meite (if we could get him fully fit) is probably the only player I would actually want of those who've left (aside from Hoilett who might still be with us).

Agree. Moore looked L2.

Savage, Amos, another CM, goalie, striker, 2 wingers and an attacking midfielder and we have a good squad

Intrigued as to if Djorkaeff gets minutes today. Would be an interesting option to have on the bench.

Will be interesting in general to see which trialists who played last week against Sutton also feature today.

If the season started tomorrow, how would we line up?

Andresson
Yiadom Holmes McIntyre NGW
Mbengue Wing Hutchinson
Azeez Knibbs
Smith

With Wing having quite a free role. Carroll, Ehib, Abrefa and some young guns on the bench. A rumour has it Savage is basically there.

We're very close now. Savage, Dean and Hoilett over the line before the season starts and we're doing OK, then maybe a few loanees in the August deadline day madness to add depth. Gone quiet on Amos and Walcott, but both would be good signings too.

We've only played Mbengue at the back and described him as a defender when he signed... he's not playing midfield.

Latest squad update?

GK: Bouzanis, Andresson, Boyce-Clarke
RB: Yiadom, Abrefa
LB: Guiness-Walker, Carson, Clarke (John)
CB: Holmes, Dorsett, Stickland
CB: Mbengue, McIntyre, Abbey
CM: Hutchinson, Craig
CM: Wing, Senga
AM: Savage, Ejaria, Knibbs
RW: Azeez,
LW: Camara,
ST: Carroll, Clarke (Jahmari)
ST: Smith, Ehibhatiomhan

About right? Bit light on the wings and midfield still, but KelvinE can play wide I think. Potentially still Hoilett to sign and this Amos chap.

Need an experienced CB in, the jury's still out IMO on all of last season's CB's even though we're in L1

Really hard to see a shape in that.

Would surely have to play 2 upfront with Smith off Carroll.

If all fit:

...................Bouzanis
Yiadom, Holmes, Mbengue, Guiness-Walker
...Azeez, Wing, Knibbs, Camara
................Carroll, Smith

Andresson, McIntyre, Abrefa, Hutchinson, Savage, Ehibhatiomhan, Craig

Looks pretty solid!

That midfield is flimsy AF. 3 wingers and a L1 John Swift. Definitely need some energy and cover of the back 4 in there

Wing played 21 games at DM for Wycombe last season according to Whoscored. 2.3 tackles a game, almost 1 interception and clearance a game.

And Knibbs is described by Cambridge fans as very hardworking, although more of an AM.

But midfield was our weakest position going in to pre-season so a bit more work welcome.

In a metronome/quarterback role. Definitely needs an energetic ball winner to compliment him. Wycombe fans describe him as similar to Drinkwater alongside Kante, and we all saw how good he is without Kante.

Yeah fair.

Well maybe 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 then?

Think it’s be something very similar to this. Smith played right AM I believe T times last year?

Apparently Ejaria is one of the burning questions that Tim has for the manager, so will be interesting to learn where things are now with him.

For the record it all stems back to when he refused to come on as a sub at Hull last November which, as you'd expect, triggered Paul Ince to say Ejaria would never play for the club again. Of course there will be two sides to the story and we'll only have the bits which leak out. Now there's no Ince's at the club and new management in who knows where things stand, I'd like it all to be settle amicably and put behind everyone but we'll see.

I can't remember seeing or hearing Ince say that.

He's no doubt difficult to manage though, he missed months the previous season under Pauno

Guess with Dai’s latest abomination we prob need to focus on who we have already here

Still don’t think it’s at all bad if just relying more on youth than would be hoped - performances of Abbey, Craig, Senga etc can provide some encouragement.

Got quantity but not quality at the back, quality but not quantity in the midfield, couple of good strikers

Prob area that concerns me most are the attacking mids - Knibbs looks good, Azeez hasn’t impressed in preseason, Ejaria been crap for 2 years and injured. Time for one or two of the younger chaps to step forward there I think
