What`s not to like about the coming season?

Carroll may not be suited to Selles' pressing game, so when Smith becomes fit and if we sign another, I wonder if he'll start games on the bench. But find a plan to service him and he'll be lethal at this level. Hopefully Selles has a plan.

How the oxf*rd did the teams of 2005/2006 and before that, 1985/1986, and pretty much any team of the 1970’s (and before) etc get by?….pretty much the same starters each game

Yes maybe, the game is played at a different pace, and they are all ‘fine tuned athletes’ these days…….but by oxf*rd, they cannot be that precious surely?

1978-79 title winners - keeper and back four didn't miss any of the 46 league games through injury. Two players missed one match each through suspension. They weren't always fit to play but they did anyway! Had a 57 game season (including cup games) using basically 15 players. Nails.

Liverpool won the league title in 1966 using just 14 players and only 15 were used in playing 53 games across all competitions including reaching the CupWinners Cup Final.

We'll need a decent squad with 15 minutes injury/sub/time wasting time likely to be added to each game, the youth will needed like never before plus with 5 from 9 subs I'm hoping Selles uses his bench better than previous managers

Watching an old game from the 80s is like watching in slow motion compared to now. God knows what the 60s looked like.

Used to watch Superstars on the telly back in the 70s and footballers were usually the crappiest most unfit stars competing. If that programme came back on the telly now reckon they'd be right up there with the modern day equivalents of Brian Jacks.

It was the Formula One drivers and jockeys who were useless in Superstars - I seem to remember Malcolm (SuperMac) McDonald was the quickest…

Current Footballers are not at all tough - because they no longer need to be.

Souness would have ‘sorted’ anyone claiming to be a ‘ball winner’ of today - probably by surgically removing their balls with his studs.

But not only was he hard but he was one of the best footballers in the world and won everything; on many occasions..

I remember Remi Moses and Bryan Robson daring to consider themselves as tough midfielders…..it didn’t last very long.

What a player Souness was…and he would play all season ….

Rarely injured.

Can you imagine anyone having the crass stupidity to wear multi-coloured football boots against Case and Souness?

Footballers today are not required to be tough and resilient.

Instead they must ‘protect themselves’ and ensure that referees protect them and know how to play the ball square or backwards when facing an opponent (never waste spectacular skills to actually beat someone - far better to use them for the purposes of ineffective showboating) and they must know that you never cross a ball at the byline; instead you must give it back to the right footed left back (or vice versa) who will run towards the centre before passing it square or backwards …

And the team will have great possession stats….

And we lo know that’s what really counts…
