Comparing women's football to men's football is a bit like claiming female athletes are shit because no-one's run a sub 10 second 100m.

Having said that, it only really seems to be football where there's this endless comparison between the men's and women's game rather than taking each on their own merits.

Mr Angry As for the argument about men v women, there is no argument.

Reading men's professional team would destroy England women's professional team.

The US Women's team (Megan Rapinhoe et al) played the FC Dallas U15's in a friendly - and got hammered 5-2 by the boys; they have tried to get all copies of videos posted on YouTube of the game taken down as it totally destroys their argument that men and women football players in the US should get the same pay.

But that would be the same in ANY sport where there is physicality; men are generally physically stronger than women, and that is irrelevant to the argument about Women's football; it is entertaining and they do play some great stuff.

What I like about the women’s game is that it is less ‘professional’ and more ‘sporting’. Fewer tactical fouls, time wasting, diving etc.

The one exception is Columbia. Which is why I hope they all get shot by the cartels when they crash out of the knockout rounds.

Classy

I’m sorry I failed to live up to your high expectations Orion1871.

Can’t say I’ve really registered your output on this portal. Could you flesh out your hobnob persona for me a bit?

What’s your favourite colour, who is the worst of the 20th century dictators, and what are you wearing?

Thanks in advance

Ok, so my take on the WWC is that the, although some of the games have been entertaining, the standard has been shocking for, supposedly, the best players in the world.

Although the physicality is an issue, it’s the inability to control a ball properly or play a short pass accurately (neither of which require physicality) that is the main issue.
Even at non-League level someone will play a pass or score a worldy, so we should expect, and we get, a few.

As for comparisons to other womens sports, there has been significant comparison of the two cricket sports and the genuine improvement in the womens game has been extremely refreshing.

Football just has a very long way to go.

The Netherlands game was scheduled at 4AM here because they expected the USA to top the group and it would have been prime time for the US. Should that have been so planned, I think not. Happy to wake up and find that they have won the game.
Also if the Dutch proceed further they will have to play the USA again when they already played them in the group.
Has this sort of thing happened before?

Bookies probably didn’t take into account that the refs would let Columbia get away with murder.

St Pauli Wtf? How is that not a penalty?

Because she let the player run into her made a meal of the dive.

On the red card, that was despicable stamping on a players spine like that. No need for it and arguably in such an important game.
She may have cost England very dearly. Shouldn't be allowed to play for England again for the foreseeable future.

It was despicable. England do not deserve to win this game.

As somebody posted on the BBC website this was Beckham all over again especially as she had become the poster girl for the team.

Lauren James had (and will have, of course) the world at her feet - looks like becoming a phenomenal player but that was phenomenally stupid. A moment of red mist from a young player in the media glare - Beckham comparisons fair and obvious.

If we (very much undeservedly) squeak through on penalties, is her tournament over? Violent conduct is normally 3 games.

Surprised it has been such a slog for England. Gabby Logan made the game against the team who are "only 40th in the world" sound so easy when the teams were lining up in the tunnel before the game.
