Banbury United – Banbury with a much needed win midweek 2-1 at Boston
- out of warped interest , sparked by this weekend’s match-up above, thought I’d check on the respective fortunes of these two:
- ‘port (or Sandgrounders if you will) dropped out of the League in the late 70’s - admittedly a lifetime ago – and the two did meet (possibly for the first time) in the league last season – ‘Puritans’ doing the double.
- That season of Southport's demotion [77-78 so pre-Pyramid years] had Banbury finishing 6th in the Southern League One North – won that year by Witney Town, with Bridgend Town runners-up and Burton Albion 3rd. 4th placed Enderby Town (me neither? ) dropped back into the Midland leagues and re-emerged as Leicester Utd - then seemed to vanish in the mid-90s. Other noteworthy names, lower down the table, were Oswestry Town (now part of TNS) and Milton Keynes City – formerly Bletchley Town – folded 84-85 - reformed and folded again - after a brief spell in the S.Mids league late 90s early 00s.
- In the Southern Section that season (won by Margate) – Trowbridge Town were going strong (now @ STEP07 but re-building)
- Addlestone - finished above Crawley Town – also went through a merger & disappearance in the early 90s but a club from that area (nr Chertsey, formerly called Lyne - shared at Ascot very recently) have revived the name for this season.
- finishing just below them were Hounslow who, having also been through various moves and mergers in the 80s 90s and beyond, are now part of the club currently known as Bedfont. I believe the Feltham part of that club has broken away again and have just returned as a separate entity to the Middlesex County Leagues for this season. They are playing on the 2nd pitch at Spelthorne – were formerly resident at the 'grand old' Feltham Arena but forced out in 2004 due to ongoing vandalism. NAT-S
