Will United fans be pleased that their ineptitude might cost the PL its fifth CL place?

Don't we get a 5th Champions League place regardless due to the new Champions League format next season?

no. the 2 highest performing leagues in European Competitions will be given an extra CL spot for next season. 4 of the last 5 seasons that would have been the PL.

Current coefficient standings for this:

1. Germany, 12.93
2. Italy, 12.86
3. England, 11.88
4. Spain, 11.81
5. Belgium, 9.8
6. France, 9.42
7. Czechia, 9.25
8. Turkey, 9.00
9. Denmark, 8.50
10. Netherlands, 8.20

It just makes it harder for the lesser clubs to progress. One or two shock results isn't going to get them a surprise second place in their group any more.

That being said I'd quite like it if this new expanded 'league stage' then saw the top 8 progress directly to the QFs. Would be a real fight between the top seeds to secure one of those spots, and some big clubs would lose out, probably by a point or on goal difference. But money talks, so you only fail to progress at least to the play-offs if you finish lower than 24th (which of course makes it harder still for the better sides to go out).

Pretty guaranteed isn't it, can't see Belgian or French clubs making up the difference, even with an underperforming ManU. And if Liverpool and West Ham rip up the other competitions does that help towards it?

We aren't helped by Real Sociedad having an excellent CL group stage, and likewise Lazio are into R16. Coupled with United's exit and Arsenal and City really need to go deep into the tournament. In Europa League, all of the English, German, Italian and Spanish sides have made it through the groups with a game to spare. Will come down to knock-out stage results, but for now looks unlikely the PL will get that fifth spot.

Not sure on the source of ESPN's numbers, but the UEFA website currently has us fourth in 23/24.

Fwiw, performance of French and Dutch teams this season is pretty critical for 25/26 season. Netherlands have edged ahead of France into 5th spot in the coefficient ranking, which is the difference between 3 and 4 teams into the competition.

'Race for 15th' one to watch too, as that is the jump from 1 spot to 2.

Ooof has it really come to this? They can surely do a bit better? Probably wouldn't be able to get him but they should be all over Unai Emery IMO.

It's horseshit, unlikely that ETH is going anywhere! Unless he goes on an amazingly bad run in the next month

Reports are that Radcliffe will complete his deal next week and will immediately take over all football operations. He doesn’t fancy ETH. And has already had conversations with potter. Obviously all paper talk I guess we will find out soon enough. Liverpool up at the weekend…
