MATCHWATCH : Bolton Wanderers (a)

by Sutekh » 29 Mar 2024 16:58

When : Monday 1 April, 3pm
Where : Macron Stadium, Burnden Way, Horwich, Bolton, BL6 6JW
Capacity : 28,723

Bolton away, the perfect Easter fixture for the likes of Reading say the FL

The Trotters are currently trailing Derby by 6 points for the second automatic promotion place, but do have a game in hand, so expectation from this game will not be very high but there are uncertainties with Bolton at the moment given they've only won 2 of their last 6 games, but they were both home wins without conceding a goal so this will be pretty tough.

It's the strikers that need to be stopped as Dion Charles (13) and Victor Adeboyejo (10) have rattled in 23 between them this season in addition Paris Maghoma and George Thomason have been thoroughly decent contributors from midfield while Cameron Jerome is playing the role of perennial substitute (which will be something for us to look forward to after about an hour) so put that lot together with some thought of revenge for the Royals turning them over earlier in the season this game will be a real challenge for Mr Selles.

Everyone will hopefully still be fit after the Good Friday 3 points v Northampton and hopefully any tiredness will be matched by tiredness in the Bolton team, so it should still be the best side that Reading can put together that takes to the field

The other Easter Monday L1 games involving strugglers...

Bristol Rovers v Shrewsbury
Burton v Barnsley
Cambridge v Wigan
Carlisle v Lincoln
Charlton v Stevenage
Cheltenham v Exeter
Northampton v Port Vale
Oxford v Fleetwood

Referee

Ben Toner

Previous
06 Jan 18 > Stevenage 0-0 Reading (FA Cup)

Historically

Just the 3 wins to show from 16 previous league visits to Bolton Wanderers and all league games have been played in the years since 1984. Only one clean sheet has been managed by Reading in those games as well. Bolton have managed more than double the number of Reading wins so Bolton away is a game that usually results in a bad case of depression.

However, on the upside, this century Reading have only lost 1 of their 7 visits to Bolton (W2 D4 L1)...

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an RoyalTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Kelv really needs to start over Elliott. Away game against a good team? Could see Craig starting ahead of Savage, but the Welshman has really stepped up after his bench stint.

Yiadom back from suspension do we change a winning team and he comes straight back in? 2 wins and 2 clean sheets since he’s been out the team. Would be very harsh on mola, who after a shaky start for us is looking ok now.

I thought Mola was pretty ropey today at RB, so I'd have Yids straight back in.

Would be a tricky choice whether to switch Mola to LB where he was decent in Dorsett's absence or drop him and leave Jerial where he is.

My call, and I can't quite believe this, would be:

......................Pereira
Yiadom, Mbengue, Bindon, Mola
................Wing,......Craig
..Azeez,.........Knibbs...........Kelv
........................Smith

Dorsett still slightly ahead for me. Think I saw we’ve only lost 2 which he has started. Craig not played that much recently which is unfortunate as didn’t do a lot wrong. Savage excellent today though, so would keep him in

Kelv is better than Elliott but coming off the bench suits him atm. So might give Elliott another chance. Was poor today mind you

Bit nuts that were not really even considering Holmes to start. Mbengue and Bindon doing very well

Didn't realise, but their recent form is pretty mediocre. W4, D3, L3, so 15 points from 10 which is not promotion form. All losses away from home though, so would be some effort for us to win there. Draw would be great.

The game has just been called off due to an IT issue at the Toughsheet community Stadium.

You'll have to make it a bit less obvious than that. Something to work on for next April fools day.

Having spoken to a diehard Bolton fan yesterday, who just happens to live in Reading, he seems to think that we have a fair chance today. Based on the fact that they have seven players on the injury list combined with a dodgy keeper. Hence their 0-0 draw with Stevenage. We could just spring a surprise.

Kelvin thinks it was a foul in the build up.

Looking at it again I think he has a strong claim for a foul

It wasn't. Decent tackle I reckon

I don't, standard physical stuff and the ball gets away from him, maybe toed.

No stopping that shot. No real complaints, Kelv didn't have much on and he does so well with that close dribbling regularly.
