WestYorksRoyal Lincoln's last 12 games is W10, D2  Doesn't get any easier. Presume they must be playing a lot better than when we faced them in December - they were shocking that day.

Think they had just sacked their manager around then and since then the new guy really has galvanized the team.

Today is also a reality check for next season's ambitions. If any fans are hoping to stay up, complete takeover and win promotion next season, today and Pompey show how far off the levels required we are.

In a best case scenario with survival and a takeover, this team is still only 1 year into a 3 year cycle. Next season we'd be targeting top 10 with an outside shot at the play offs.

I was thinking this when walking the dogs tonight. I can see us in this league for 3-4 seasons if we survive this. Bit like Sunderland, who thought they would just bounce back...Selles will no doubt start as manager next season but I wonder how long he will be given by the new owners if we don't show fast improvement....The owners expectations and ours will be very different.

Agree - if we survive this time, next season target has to be to maintain form post Shrewsbury A for the whole season; that would give us an outside shot of the play offs.

If we can keep most of the squad next season (debatable of course) then it’s reasonable to hope the young players will improve with the experience behind them, as will the manager.

That, and the absence of the stresses this season has treated them all to, gives justifiable cause for optimism that we’d be one of the better teams and with a fair chance of play offs.

But there’s so much to happen before then it’s hardly worth thinking about so I’ll shut up now.

As my nephews, sister and BIL live in Lincoln I follow Lincoln on Facebook.

Their posting recently has been one of relentless positivity with success after success. Fair play to them nice little club.

Coming off the back of a tough game a couple of days earlier. Went behind to a wonder strike, then got back even, only to give away a daft penalty in the last minute of the second half.

Another day the first goes over. Or Mbengue doesn't dive in exhausted. Totally different game even stevens at HT.

Slightly different team selection off better scouting to cope with their pace through midfield and the flanks... say Yids in at RB, Mola at LB... maybe Craig screening instead of Savage. Maybe Mukairu left wing, or even a Dorsett-Mola combo.

Then the last couple of goals were pretty much a case of us throwing everything at it and leaving ourselves exposed as a result.

I really don't think we're that far off a top 10 - maybe promotion finish. I mean just on on the pitch performance this season we're 14th ish. And we were abysmal for about 6 weeks.

Anyone expecting promotion any season needs to take a long hard look at themselves though imo.

For arguments sake, if we had exactly the same squad as we do now for next year, I’d expect top ten, knocking on the door of the play offs

Almost completely outplayed today. They looked a class above where we're at and was frustrating how easy it was to get behind us, just a simple ball over the top.

Pereira - 6- can't see why people are questioning whether he should be in the team. Wasn't at fault for any goals (although didn't see 5th as had left). Also made a quality save at 1-0 down to keep us in it.

Mola - 7 - when our right back is our most enterprising attacker that tells you a lot about our front 4 today.

Bindon - 5 - looked totally knackered, out of position a lot but great attitude.

Mbengue - 3 - so frustrating, was excellent first 45 then stupidly gives away a pen as we got a foothold in the game. For our experienced defender that was schoolboy defending.

Dorsett - 5 - average

Savage - 3 - so one dimensional, huffs and puffs but seems to possess very little quality.

Wing - 7 - great goal, looks our best played by a mile.

Azeez - 2 - almost totally anonymous, tried shooting constantly to little or no effect.

Knibbs - 2 - didn't realise he was playing for large parts.

Kelvin - 2 - looked really leggy. Awful pass that led to the break for their 3rd. Showed why he's a much better impact player than a starter.

Smith - 2 - totally dominated by their defence.

Looking at match stats you'd think we were in the game but majority of shots were outside the box, don't remember us getting behind their back line. Bolton were class today, we're a long way behind them in terms of ability, if we have the same squad next year can't see us getting near the playoffs. Cheap though, only a tenner so every cloud...

I'll be happy to get this season over and done with. Stay up and start again next season. We should be much better for the year ahead assuming the takeover goes through and we can make some solid signings. The core of a decent side is there.

No shame in today, even the 5 goals. Bolton were very good and hopefully our young side learn some lessons from that. When you have a go at sides like that who are better than us on their own patch then we risk shipping a few which is what happened. Hopefully they win the playoffs as I fancy us to be up near the playoffs if our next owner(s) isn't an utter shit. I definitely don't want to be competing with Bolton next season.

In 2 years I'd like us to be where Bolton are now, playing decent football and outgunning sides like they did with us and challenging for promotion.

Our left side has been a bit of a problem all season. Knibbs was ineffective there at the start of the season and since we changed formation, no one has really held their own there

Personally think that whilst he’s a bit of an enigma, Mukairu is comfortably our best option there. We’ve played some of our best football with him in the side. Like Knibbs, Elliott is better in the middle and Kelvin rarely makes an impact when starting games. Certainly something that needs to be sorted out for next season

Pretty much agree these ratings. Really disappointed in Azeez recently, should be a stand out player in this team but tries too many glory shots and just doesn’t get in the game. Mbengue deserves the mark for the penalty but played well apart from that.

Your ratings are pretty much spot on although slightly harsh on Mbengue.
I travelled back to Chesterfield with a Bolton fan and he said that was the most up for a game they had been all season. A big crowd and a chance to close the gap on Derby. They’re a really good team and I hope they beat Derby to automatic promotion.

It was all fine margins and on another day we could have got something. We still need to survive this season, but if we can keep the majority of the squad together and add a bit more experience we could be a top 8 side next season. We don’t seem to get many gimmes in terms of penalties and other teams having players sent off against us. We did get a few OGs a while back though.

Weird game in many ways especially if you look at the stats as we equalled the amount of shots of Bolton and they only had 1 more on target than us but they probably had higher quality chances.

Can't do much about a 25 yarder in the top corner but the ball should have just been cleared quicker, Dorsett getting a knock didn't help as the usual plan seemed to be to roll it back to him to clear but the five mins either side of half time were the killer - getting back to 1-1 really knocked Bolton, who probably were getting the feeling it was going to be one of those days as they hadn't found a second. Mbengue was playing so well, he clearly thought he could do no wrong so slid in for a tackle that didn't need to be made, just hold the player wide and the danger goes. 3rd was too easy in the 2nd but we were already pushing forward.

Change of formation really put us on the front foot and think the offside for Wareham's "goal" was very tight but probably right, poss one that goes your way as a home side. Bolton were rocking a bit but not getting a second when we were all over them meant we were always susceptible to letting in a 4th, which killed the game.

Overall, not concerned in the slightest, we would have all taken 3 points this weekend and we got those on Friday and with most teams below us also losing it is, on balance, a good day.

Annoying thing is, if Dai had just paid the bills on time, we'd be level on points with 12th now and the discussion would simply be about if we can squeeze a top half finish and how that could set us up for a real tilt at play-offs or even promotion next year under new owners - instead, we are still working out the maths for staying up.

Very fair post on the whole. Not concerned by that really, we lost to what I thought was a championship quality performance from Bolton, I think we showed some inexperience at the back and the likes of Pereira, Mbengue and Bindon will hopefully learn from that. Mbengue was very silly to make the challenge. Go in at half time at 1-1 and it could have been a different game. I'm glad we didn't throw in the towel and kept pushing forward even when 4-1 down.

5 more points should see us safe, 2 wins most likely will. A draw on Saturday another vs Bristol Rovers and a win at Burton should be manageable for our side with anything vs Barnsley a bonus. Blackpool hopefully won't matter but also fancy us to get at least a point against them as well.

But galling that Bolton's main route of attack was a long diagonal ball.

Filed under same category as Pompey away, gave a better side the odd spell of worry but taken apart in the end. Young side, went for it at 3-1, few mistakes, suddenly it's a big defeat.

Defending on fourth was dreadful, though.

I think Kelvin is our best attacking option and Mukairu is our best defensive(LOL) option.

Kelv tires early in games, but he generally plays good stuff whilst fresh, start or sub imo. Went through a phase where he had no confidence in front of goal, but that seems on the mend now.

I think like Elliott and Knibbs (and Smith to an extent tbh) he's better off as a 10 behind someone who can lead the line, though.

So we could use a LW next season. I think Hoilett could have done a very good job there for us this season, finances excepted of course.

I think Knibbs would do better out there in this new shape that actually works compared to the shite 4-2-2-2 bolloxs though.
