WiFi reception at the ground

by LUX » 27 Apr 2024 20:37

Why is WiFi reception so poor at the ground? In Y21 everyone was trying to get the other scores ( Oxford, Lincoln, Cheltenham etc). No luck. You cannot even send messages home.

Thinking about it, I prolly mean 4G/5G, not WiFi.

But the question is valid.

Virtually impossible to get a signal inside the ground, but some people don`t appear to have problems. not sure there is wi-fi available tbh.

It's been the same all season. It just doesn't work. The only joy I get on that front is when moving up to the NE corner for the second half, and picking up the B&Q wifi.

Change your phone network settings to 3G. No one uses 3g any more so although slow you can get connection. 3G uses different frequency bands and spectrums to 4G - 2100 MHz. 4G LTE uses different frequency bands - 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 1.7/2.1 GHz, 2.3 GHz, and 2.5 GHz. The mobile data companies still have to provide 3G by law, so all connections masts offer it still.

Had no issue today, but always used to. 10,000 people all trying to use their phone at the same time and place is going to cause some issues anywhere.

Are you referring to the stadium wifi, or general mobile reception?

I've struggled with both for most of this season.

Mobile reception, didn't know there was stadium wifi. But I suspect applies to both.

Was row KK so maybe being back and high helps reception.

O2 never works until you are down to the roundabout.

Vodafone occasionally works inside the ground.

I used to have access to the hospitality wife within ground but that now seems to be turned off.

Used to use the EE network through BT and never had issues with it, after switching to Sky (who use O2's network) it's been awful at the ground.

At Portsmouth, it took nearly an hour after the game before I got anything usable again and that's travelling away from the ground (albeit slowly due to the traffic).

Hopefully the wifi at the stadium will be improved in the summer - as that works well if you can get on it.

Always get decent reception with Smarty (Three), Unusual given that Three can be absolutely crap in the centre of major cities.

I cheered him like I do all our players. He didn’t have his best game, but he’s still young and learning.

Agreed. Very harsh take. He’s now a left winger either so deserves some slack.

Been a shambles signal inside the ground for like, forever. Up until last season I used to sign into the RFC guest wi-fi and it worked a treat but, like everything related to the club/ground, it hasn't worked for the large majority of this one.

Tbf I subsequently amended it to 4G.

The mobile networks don't want to build capacity for 10k people to use their phones at once if it only happens 23 times a year for a couple of hours.
