On the plus side it's the fixture that kills dead any argument about players playing too many games

paultheroyal Just incredible don't you think. Players are tired, need a break, too many fixtures...

and here we are - Premier League finished Sunday late afternoon - 3 days later, with all that travelling, strong teams announced Tottenham are playing Newcastle as i type. Beggars belief. How much money do these clubs want!!

And Trippier has gone off injured

Could be difficult to come back from that - could be a multi year ban.

When the Pakistan cricket team committed spot fixing in a test match at Lords the following bans/prison terms were handed out:

Salman Butt: 10 year ban (5 suspended) & 2 years 6 months in prison
Mohammad Asif: 7 year ban (2 suspended) & 1 year in prison
Mohammad Amir: 5 year ban & 6 months in prison

Said it before and I'll say it again it is laughable to ban players for betting. They have issues with addiction and as far as we can see from Paqueta's case he hasn't fixed matches, I think that is a far more serious crime.

Players with gambling addictions should be used to warn against the dangers of betting to young people, their influence is invaluable. The guilty players should be given extremely hefty fines in which all of the money goes to gambling support charities. They should also be made to appear in anti gambling advertisements which could be run alongside the betting commercials in the ad breaks during live games.

This notion that a ban from playing solves the issue is quite laughable.

It would hepl football's moral standing on the issue if they weren't massively in hock to the gambling industry

Paqueta has intentionally gone out to spot-fix multiple times. He will get the book chucked at him.

As someone said earlier, it's only a few bookings

Unfortunately, it's not a stretch to think that he might extend that to changing a match result by one of those bookings becoming significant to the result (e.g. he gets another and ends up sent off)

What would the maximum bet that bookies would take for a stated player getting a yellow card ?
£500 before the alarm bells?
Remember the short-lived time of first throw-in betting--was it Le Tiss or somebody (or was it a West Ham player?).

Bookies tend to wisen up quickly and this has guilt all over it and I expect a year or even more of a suspension for the player.

NathStPaul They have issues with addiction and as far as we can see from Paqueta's case he hasn't fixed matches,

He's accused of being involved in betting in matches he's playing in, that's far more serious than players betting on matches they're not involved in. If he's deliberately picking up early bookings then he's probably having to be very careful not to pick up a second one and get sent off so it does affect his game which could affect the result.
I get where you are coming from regarding gambling addictions being a mental illness that requires help but there has to be a deterrent of some kind there and a couple of weeks fine isn't going to do that.

It also potentially puts him in hock to dubious characters who can then leverage him to worse.

The solution does need to be multi pronged though. He needs to be heavily punished. But, if he has an addiction, supported and treated. And support and treatment needs to be widespread.

You don't stop the problem just by throwing the book at the ones you catch, obviously.

Fixing stuff (like bookings) isn’t gambling and so I fail to see why he should be treated as having an addiction to gambling.

He may have that as well, but this is simply getting paid to fix a bet. Not the same thing in my opinion, and because it’s premeditated should be treated as much worse than the betting itself.

Why do betting companies even give odds on this sort of thing, yet more greed - this time by preying on those with problems.
