10 days to go. Where are you currently sitting on the whelmgage?

A bit more interested now that I have had bets around England, France and Portugal.
Can't see beyond those three but let's not forget that Greece won it once and we are serial losers so who knows?

Probably looking forward to this one more than any major tournament for a while - 2 reasons, 1 being I live in a host city and the atmosphere here is already building and 2 I have tickets to a game - will be my first major international football tournament game.

My whelm is increasing, rapidly, I must say. Buoyed by the fact that I'll be in Cyprus for our third group match, enjoying that game somewhere sun-soaked.

Same, getting more whelmed as it approaches. I love these summer tournaments.

Have’nt got any tickets, but most grounds are driveable for me.

Still rueing Luxembourg’s near miss ( got to the play-offs and were robbed by a ridiculous decision).

Not going to be whelmed at all unless Scotland either get well and truly duffed up by Germany, or pull off a miracle win over them (before doing their standard capitulation in their next group games and failing to make the 16).

Will probably enjoy it plenty, but whelmguage is still fairly empty.

I always get myself well and truly whelmed for tournaments, even when England are woeful like in 2014. I normally try to get a week's holiday somewhere sunny for the group stage so I can watch plenty, and this year is no different with a trip to Portugal.

Heard football’s coming home on the radio today

Now I’m up for it, I know all the arguments about it ‘coming home’ and that song but something about the song always gets me

I never realised how much foreign football fans dislike that song, and they think we sing it because we believe we are going to win each tournament. Lol.

Lol it’s the irony that we all really know it’s not coming home each time but still play the song

Yeah I kind of see the song as us poking fun at ourselves a bit while hoping one day it may be our turn. It's us very much acknowledging all our past failures and saying 'well, next time we can still dream can't we?!'

I tried to explain it to a Spaniard once that said other football nations hate us so much more because of that song, where we claim we are the best and will win. I pointed out none of us take it seriously and it's just a lighthearted feelgood thing. He wasn't convinced

I guess it’s a bit like many countries not quite understanding our sense of humour and irony

As you say the way most of us see it is a kind of wouldn’t it be amazing but we know it won’t happen type of song

It's also just a bloody good song, and the reference to it coming home was always the tournament being hosted here in 96 rather than us winning it anyway.

The lyrics are chock full of self-awareness of past failure, disappointment and yearning for success and the hope that this time might be different.

oxf*rd em if they can't look behind a chorus and understand the song.
