Really just want someone who has some clue tactically and prepares sides properly, unlike the last incumbent and his poor organisation when it matters most.

He was so ridiculously bad at all those things that he only managed 1 QF, 1 SF and 2 finals
In two of those we lost to arguably the best team in each competition at the time

It matters most to actually get to those stages because the most tactically astute are pretty hamstrung unless they actually reach those stages

But you need to do both
Qualify
And make the most of your opportunities in the later stages
One he has done
The other he has not

Think they are there but rarely manage to persuade chairmen to give them a chance, if they bother trying at all for the top job at a club. Be interesting to see how Chris Davies does at Birmingham, wouldn't have minded him coming to Reading last year.

I can't say I really care much about England outside a Finals these days. Rarely watch, except in the major tournament finals. Haven't watched the PL in about a decade, so often have no idea who half the players are.

But the right manager should bring a better approach to a game, for example not setting up with a formation which players are not sufficiently familiar, progressive and good tactical substitions in good time and the team generally not playing such god awful "tournamentball" in every game. Think I'd be happy with that, even with not winning things still, as not winning anything seems to be the norm for England, whoever is in charge, so it's more about how you lose and I'd rather lose while trying hard and getting plaudits than lose with the same old tired errors.

It'll always be subjective based on our own individual outlook to football.

As Ian says, Southgate's "3 times out of 4" record will be hard to better (I'd take 1 tournament win though) - trouble for me was that there were very few moments / spells in the 16 or so games involved in those runs that I found enjoyable.

I just want to enjoy watching England, and have good reason to look forward to the next game with a bit of excitement about what I am going to see. For me that would be progression.

I am not trying to bash GS but it's going to be difficult for the next manager if their route in the WC is Argentina, France, Spain, etc in the early rounds

However ‘lucky’ we may have been, with this squad and how we have finished the last few major tournaments, (and seemingly ditching the fear of penalties) if the next England manager doesn’t win a major tournament it must be seen as no progress, even failure

This is something the next manager must know and understand, unless they are stupid
