Football Grounds

by Gobsheik » 22 Jul 2024 21:06

Just as a matter of interest, I am wondering how many football grounds anyone has been to, following the Royals.
According to my calculations I have been to 132 different grounds, including all the new grounds that RFC has played at.
Also non-league grounds and don't forget the old and new Wembley.
Maybe like myself you went to S Korea to watch them.
RSVP.

I’ve done about 70 or so. Kinda lost count with all the ‘new grounds’ and recent influx of what was then considered ‘non-leaguers’.

Back in the day getting all 92 was a bucket list thing. Not sure it holds much relevance these days.

I’m sure ‘Blackey(?)’ still has them all?

Funniest tale I can tell on this subject is a mate of mine who lived in Huddersfield and only needed Burton Albion for ‘his 92’ about 15 years or so ago. They were drawn at home to Derby (I think) in FACup 3rd. Due to a harsh winter of rail disruption in that January he left home the day before in order to get there for the Saturday only to find when he eventually got there he had got the day wrong as it was due to be played on the Sunday! So he had to hang around and wait til the next day! Still, he did it!

I've done 73 grounds in total (57 of the 92), although that includes a few that haven't been for Reading games.

Have five new grounds in the league in the upcoming season (all four promoted sides and Rotherham); Colchester in the cup will also be a new one.

By 2024-25 division, my list shows:
13/20 - Premier League
18/24 - Championship
19/24 - League One
7/24 - League Two
3/24 - National League
3/48 - National League regional

The remainder are either in a lower league, in the Scottish league, or demolished in addition to Wembley.

Seen Reading on about 110 different grounds
Including non Reading games on about 150 grounds.
I know people who have been to ridiculous numbers of grounds, 5-600 or more.
Would be interesting to work out how many grounds Reading have played on in their history (if the records exist)

68 in top 4 tiers...slacked off a bit in recent years due to age.

Premier League 14
Championship 17
L1 20
L2 13

A further 5 in Tier 5 (from their league days)

Also lower than that (again league days) Darlington, Chester (old Sealand Road ground), Torquay, Hereford, Bury, Southport.

A few non league sides during FA Cup, Barry Town, Wealdstone.

Also Wembley (old and new) & Millennium Stadium (Walsall play off final)

Several duplicates not included as more than one ground, such as Millwall, Northampton, Stoke etc

Did 21 League and 1 FA cup away ground last season, to see my tally rocket up to around 50. Never got around to my 'end of year' review, be glad.

Reckon about half of the top two leagues, then almost all of league 1 and then a handful of league 2.

Total grounds will include some cracking non-league away days - Matlock vs Belper, Halesowen's crumbling bowl, Blyth Spartans in the sun.

Quite a good few already mentioned, Tranmere, Grimsby, Walsall, Brum, Bury, Gillingham blah-di-blah…

One that I did, but won’t get mentioned by anyone here, Belfast Kaserne (barracks) Osnabruck, very early eighties youthful team…pre-season kick-about against the garrisons best.

Still looking for links/reports….evidence

My memory isn’t great these days, but I’d like to think about 75% to 80% of grounds. I do remember going to Workington in 1975.

Never been one for many long journeys.

Have seen us play at Farnborough, Slough, Bracknell, Woking, Basingstoke, and Hungerford, probably more impressive than my total of 23.

My overall number (not just Reading) is 34. Part of me is now tempted to try and get that up, could knock off a bunch of non-league grounds fairly easily. Not sure I really like football enough though.

65-70 and a few overseas.

The Son Moix in Mallorca was one of my favourites although Yankee Stadium was a good laugh even though I had no idea what was going on.

Nope, that's the full total of stadia I've watched football matches at.

I've seen Reading play at 104 of them - past and present.

Swindon, Brizzle City, Cardiff, Ipswich, Hereford, Fulham, Brentford, Gillingham, Southampton, Brighton, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, QPR, Oxford, Norwich, Wembley (both) and the Millenium Stadium.

Not watching Reading I can add Yeovil, Man Utd, Sheffield Utd, WBA, Newcastle Utd.
