The Cap
Brogue Let’s not go overboard  had a poor run at Southampton a shit start with us. He’s had half a season where he worked wonders. But in a weird way our struggles probably helped him. The fans rallied against the efl and dai and the players and manager rode the crest of that wave. For him to be classed as hot property he needs more than a half season of ok results.

Ah come on Brogue, he's the best thing since sliced bread mate. Hovis, Warburtons...?

Lol yeah I’m not knocking him, but he kneads to rise to the occasion and have a good season. And prove he can sustain it for a whole season. Then other clubs might offer him the dough for him to move up the leagues.

Selles has been brilliant, in awful circumstances. That's it. End of. Our expectations should still be on the low side.

Very good start to the season. A draw not an unfair result but we'll be gutted not to have held on for three points.

Shame for Wing, but (and I haven't read much of the rest of the thread) he leant into it in my view, looks clear as day. We'd be apoplectic if such a shout wasn't given at the other end.

I wonder how it would have panned out if he'd inherited a team of experienced lower league journeymen. The old guard were shunted out pretty quickly and ruthlessly. At least now he's established a playing style and a mentality and hopefully going forward, he can pinpoint players rather than having to go with what's left.

He's clearly an excellent man manager and the players love him but I wonder whether he'd get the time to replicate that at another club. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I'm so glad we didn't get Wilder.

Wilder would have been interesting as part of a package including signing some decent players in an attempt to go straight back up. He wouldn’t have hung around last year I doubt when it all went to shit

Thing that Selles has achieved is using young players and really imposing a style on the team with a degree of success. That’s what a lot of owner's would look for

Then also popular with fans and players and conducts himself well. I suspect many teams will be at least taking an interest

I do wonder though if our situation has created a perfect storm of him being given time with a young squad that he can work with and impose a style and whether he would get that anywhere else.

I think he will be on the short list at a number of clubs but they'd be foolish to think he can just step in and work wonders immediately. Couhig stuck by Ainsworth at Wycombe so there's no reason to think he'd be quick to fire him so Selles may be in no hurry to move regardless of who came knocking. He's got a lot of credit in the bank with both the club and supporters and will be left to get on with it. I'd say that with new owners on the horizon, were potentially one of the more interesting jobs in football.

He’s not even in the top 35 managers on the betting odds. And like I said earlier. He’s got half a season of ok results behind him. No championship club will be taking a punt on him yet. Especially a team in the top half who will have ambitions of finishing in the play offs.

Plymouth are the sort of club that could take a punt in the late autumn when Rooney is sacked. Judging by what I saw of them at Sheffield yesterday that could be sooner rather than later, they were abysmal.

Absolutely. If we have a good start to the season I can see the lower championship sides showing an interest.

I do feel that our limited success on the pitch last season was down to the recruitment which was excellent for this level of football.
Proven performers in Knibbs, Smith and Wing formed the bedrock of the side and whoever spotted Bindon and, to a lesser extent, Elliot deserves a medal.

If Selles was the man behind these transfers then top marks to him and we might even get more once the ownership is sorted.
I am with Brogue in that so far Selles hasn't pulled up any trees on the pitch but his standing with us fans improved greatly as the season progressed by virtue of his behaviour in the face of adversity and gradually an improvement in results on the pitch.

Because of our survival against the odds we fans feel a sense of gratitude but whether Selles' standing in the wider football community is seen in a similar vein is questionable.
I may be a bit influenced by Saints fans down here who regard him as a clown who talked a good game but got them relegated-that now seems rather harsh and it could just be that because he was given time by Reading he was able to eventually make a difference whereas at Southampton he had a team that was already on its way to being relegated when he took over.

His time at Southampton is an absolute red herring IMO. He was a literal caretaker after Ralphy Rabbithutch and effectively one after Nathan Jones. They were pretty much doomed when Jones left.

I think the style of play and how we compete in matches gives me confidence. Pauno and Stam both had good runs, but on neither occasion did it feel sustainable; results were better than performances suggested.

Whereas now, I'd say we've been leaving points out there in 2024. A few additions plus the team gaining experience, and the results under Selles can go to another level.

Southampton were in terminal decline when Selles took over - I doubt anyone could have saved them.

He started badly at Reading because he, rather stubbornly, insisted on playing in a certain formation that clearly just wasn't working. So he changed it, and the results thereafter speak for themselves.

The managers that succeed are the ones that adapt. the ones that fail are those that don't.

I still think it will take another half season at least before other clubs start seriously looking at him. But pretty everyone reckons he did an amazing job last season - if he carries on that way he will be on the list of many Championship clubs in the next year or so.

As I posted, I thought Saints fans were a bit harsh in their comments.

I wouldn't.

I genuinely don't see what he could have done differently. Yeah, he leant in, of course he leant in, he's supposed to be leaning in to try to get his chest in the way.

It hit him high on the arm, which was flat in at his side, because it can't be anywhere else unless he amputates it. So high it didn't matter if he had arms behind his back.

Millsy How in God's name was that even close to being a penalty?

It's the most ridiculous penalty decision I've seen all season.

Hi millsy been anywhere nice?

Spent some time in Devon. Nice, if you like that sort of thing I suppose. Like singletrack 'roads' narrower than your car to get anywhere.

How've you been?
