Royal_jimmy Don't know what Blackpools official following was but guessing it was around 1800 or so

It was apparently 1,752. So you’re pretty spot on. :)

Might as well put this up. I'm not bothering with average attendances by club at this stage as one or two games doesn't really tell us anything.

2024-25 Reading away followings (allocation in brackets; midweek evening matches in italics)
  1. Birmingham - ~1,650 (2,200)
  2. Colchester (LC) - 639 (988)
  3. Wrexham - 1,259 (1,284)
  4. Bolton - ON SALE (1,430)
Away followings at the Madejski Stadium
Midweek matches in italics
  1. Wigan - 453
  2. West Ham U21s (LT) - 245

I see Charlton took the full allocation for this weekend initially but not seen anything to suggest they have sold that out.

Based on their forum, they've sold around 2,300 by last night.

First average for the entire division for the season. Always worth noting these can change quite rapidly once sides have a more representative batch of away games, kick-off times, etc.

Incidentally, I found the figure for Charlton's away following for the EFL Trophy game against them last season - 249. So the final away following at the Madejski Stadium last season was:

Clearly!

I have an appointment today, so needed to do something to fill the time before it. Although it didn't take me too long to find out - James Earnshaw tweeted it at the time, but I missed it. All I had to do was search for his tweets on that day.

Down a bit on last season, guess the novelty of, say, Bolton or Exeter is faded.

Weren't the Bolton game on Easter weekend and prices super cheap last year? Plus we got a dipping up there last year.

Exeter Tuesday night game this year v Saturday afternoon in August last year.

Guess things like that will also come into play.

yeah, fair. You'd assume that they'd kinda balance out over the season?

True.

Still expect us to be down by a hundred or so.

I don't think I would expect it to even out over a season.

There's only 23 away games. And relatively few of those have big away sections and are relatively easily accessible, so if a couple of our typically highest attendance ones get bad slots to go to, it's not going to be cancelled out by a couple of the small awkward ones getting prime slots.

Not disagreeing (well, I am, maybe, but i'm trying to hide it)

How many games is enough?

Take last season. After 3 games, our average was 1181 away fans. After 23 games, it was 1220. A 3% change, likely insignificant.
Just as a back of an envelope bit of maths, the differences between values (hundreds) are typically smaller than the values (thousands), so an outlier will likely average out over 10 games, let alone 23. The biggest single swing would be maybe 1500 fans, which boils down to 65 in the average over a season.

Just as supporting evidence, this is the summary from last year - most games in that 3rd category or close to either side.
Over 2000 - 1
Between 1500 and 1999 - 4
Between 1000 and 1499 - 10
Up to 999 - 8
