International postponements

by Only one Trevor Morley » 03 Sep 2024 12:23

I know the rule is that you have to have 3 regular players called up in order to postpone a league one game.

Bindon and Savage qualify. Not sure CBC or Tuma do? So was it Stockport who got the postponement of this weeks fixture or us?

Reason I ask is that next internal weekends games look like they clash with Barnsley away and Shrewsbury at home. Both are playing at weekend so my question is whether our games against them might go ahead if it was Stockport who engineered postponement?

With the small squad reading have I do wonder whether avoiding a fixture back log might be helpful? That said Savage and Bindon would be big misses.

Coniah Boyce-Clark & Dorsett too. It's all on us, Stockport confirmed this when they announced the news on club website at the time.

Does CBC qualify though? Is it any call up? even if player not playing regularly.

He's on the bench every game.

He is for now. But button may take up that deputy role now that he is coming back from injury.

I doubt it, but doesn’t really matter if he does, CBC is currently our number 2 and a crucial member of the matchday squad. What happens in two or three weeks doesn't change that for this International break.

The rule is simply if 3 or more players are called up, you can postpone.

There is no rule about them playing X games etc - just if you lose 3 or more players from your available squad then you can call off. It is there to stop sides having to play a weakened side - for example, we would miss CBC, Savage, Bindon and Tuma - all were involved on Saturday.

Say we then loose 2 or 3 more players to injury and side would be markedly weaker than it needs to be.

A club can choose to play the game still - for example, Charlton have chosen not to postpone their game v Rotherham despite having had 3 call ups.

Believe the likely drafted players for each "break" would be:

    Bindon - New Zealand
Tuma - Malta u21 (or Uganda or perhaps one day England :D )
    Savage - Wales
    CBC - Jamaica
    Dorsett - Monserat

Don't think Yiadom gets called up any more but he might get a reprieve from Ghana at some point.

What I don't get is how the game was called off before any squads were announced - presume the club must have got early tip offs.

Clubs get given advance warning if a player is likely to be selected.

I suppose there must come a point where you have to balance out losing players with the fact that you’re storing up a load of midweek fixtures. Wouldn’t surprise me if we actually play Shrewsbury to avoid a pile up

If it's a Saturday home game, there may be the financial temptation to play it. It's only the November international break, that we have a home fixture (Shrewsbury). The other three breaks (Stockport – Saturday, Barnsley – October and Shrewsbury – March) are all away, so probably makes less financial difference switching to midweek.
