Had to laugh on a Facebook post I saw moaning about them going straight to GS. We'll do well to sell 500 for this. I certainly won't be attending.

When I saw the allocation of nearly 2,000, I assumed it would be straight to general sale. Can't believe anyone would complain about Rotherham of all places being straight to general sale.

I have us selling 276 so far - so I recommend buying soon to confirm disappointment.

I do find that very odd that someone would complain about them going straight to general sale in these circumstances, not like anyone would struggle to get a ticket.

RG is there a particular reason(s) you say that, just out interest? You go to most away games right?

I won't be going either, I went to Rotherham away a couple seasons ago, in August 2022. We lost 4-0 lol. Lumley had a shocker, was at fault for 3 goals including one howler in particular. If it wasn't for that it was probably a 1-0 game or even a 0-0, we were far from great but they weren't much better, wasn't much in it.

Anyway I personally thought from what I saw of the town itself it was actually alright, there's certainly plenty of more unattractive places and worse away days in the UK. We went to a couple of pubs before the match and the home fans were friendly.

Although the ground itself is a fairly boring new style modern bowl its basically in the town centre which is a big plus, adds to its character and its not miles away from pubs and everything else, unlike many of the new style stadia that are on the edge of town.

Away attendance wise on that day I'm really not sure but it was at the start of the season on a sunny day in August which would have likely boosted numbers a bit. We were also still in Championship then so the average attendance would be a bit higher. I'd say we were definitely over 500 but definitely under 1000. Maybe Clyde will know or be able to find out. But yeah I expect similar numbers this time, probably even less. A lot will depend on what happens in the coming weeks of course.

2014-15 - 210 (re-arranged midweek)
2015-16 - 472 (midweek)
2016-17 - 644
2018-19 - 433
2022-23 - 637

So, your estimate of more than 500 but below 1,000 was correct.

I only have two figures for their old ground, 863 in 2000-01 and approximately 800 in 2002-03 - both being seasons with a lot of optimism behind them. I also don't know what the ticket prices, etc. were for those games.

If we take anywhere near 1,000 we would've done very well - let alone selling nearly 2,000. A few more wins before we play them and a takeover would boost the numbers, but wouldn't cause any issues in people getting tickets. I'd be surprised if we take over 700 though.

Interesting that we've never took more than 700 up there. Was just curious as to why it seems such an unpopular away game for our fans, as for reasons I already stated its actually a half decent away day. I know it's far from the closest game to us but we seem to take a lot more fans to to other clubs in that area, albeit they're probably mostly bigger clubs.

I've started working on a model to 'predict' away followings - still needs some work. That said, the biggest factor for away followings seems to be how the big the opposition is (I'm using Football Manager reputation as a proxy), followed by travel distance then how long since we've played at that ground.

I guess people are more likely to travel to games against a bigger team, even when they're the same distance, due to being more selective with away matches. If you're going to five away games in a season, Rotherham probably isn't one people would pick.

I always thought August attendances tended to be slightly lower, people on holiday etc.

That said, the biggest factor for away followings seems to be how the big the opposition is (I'm using Football Manager reputation as a proxy), followed by travel distance then how long since we've played at that ground.

You'll have a core 'go to every away game' crowd, then the rest sort of makes sense.

Just from my own experience, the only away games last season I missed were Leyton Orient*, Oxford and Barnsley. Two local rivals, which sold out before siLOLver LOLoyaLOLty, and then a fairly long away day I'd already done in 2022.
