MATCHWATCH : Huddersfield Town (h)

by Sutekh » 24 Sep 2024 10:12

When : Saturday September 28, 12.30pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

The first Saturday lunch time home game for the telly fixtures of the season and there'll be a bit of a run of these with Reading's home games up to Christmas but at least it's a better ko time than getting dumped with Thursday, Friday or Monday evening starts.

So, for the first home game since the realisation to most that Dai has no intention of selling the club on sensible terms, we have a visit from a Huddersfield team that really should be play off bound at the very least so this is yet another request of Ruben and the players to dig deep and turn out a top performance rather like that v Charlton and certainly not like the dire tripe that was presented v Orient last time out.

Huddersfield have only been beaten once on their league travels so far, 2-1 at Rotherham, their last away trip produced a 4-0 stuffing of Bolton where Reading didn't really get going last week. However they do have issues that can be exploited as their 3-1 loss at home to Northampton last weekend shows.

Another team with a lot of changes of over the summer (around 10 arrivals, 3 of which are on loan) but manager Michael Duff has them playing together quite well and got them to 5th place on 12 points already. Forward Josh Koroma is leading the way with 4 goals followed closely by midfielder Ben Wiles with 3 so it's likely to be a hard afternoon for Reading's defence to try and keep things quiet at the business end of the Terriers.

What state of mind will be dominating the players remains to be seen but it is hoped fans will show plenty of vociferous and positive support for the team and management throughout the game rather than dwelling on the rather obvious other matters, though I'd expect there to be plenty of large visual banners etc. to cover that with the game being on the telly button thing that Sky offer.

Injuries will mean Button starting over Pereira and Abrefa over Dorsett while it is hoped Savage will return to put a bit more bite into midfield than that which was on display in Bolton on Saturday last.

Referee

Scott "no Reading wins out of 4 attempts" Oldham

Previously

20 Apr 24 > Burton Albion 3-2 Reading
03 Feb 24 > Oxford United 1-1 Reading
21 Oct 23 > Charlton Athletic 4-0 Reading
07 Apr 23 > Reading 1-1 Birmingham City

Historically

The first time Reading played Huddersfield was at Elm Park in October 1975, since then then there has been another 25 home league games and, overall, Reading have the edge by 13 wins to 5 and have scored 42 to the Terrier’s 29. Recently though it’s been pretty poor for Reading with just 2 wins from the last 8 home league games.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Sky red button thing
  3. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

To be frank, if we get anything out of this game it will be incredible.

Would like to see the team switched up a bit.

.......................Button
Abrefa, Mbengue, Bindon, Garcia
.........................Wing,
Campbell, Knibbs, Savage, Ehibhatiomhan
.........................Smith

Be tempted to bring in Akande for Kelvin, or maybe Smith or Campbell, but with Knibbs back and Campbell knew I think it just needs a bit longer.

Concerned about the support Garcia would get from Kelvin... but he is at least a fullback, and a bit pacier.

If we wanted to go super steady the ship, I'd say

.......................Button
Abrefa, Mbengue, Bindon, Garcia
.........................Craig
Campbell, Wing, Savage, Knibbs
........................Smith.

This last one, Proper yet young full backs, Craig back in his best position and Wing moved further up the pitch where he is more dangerous!!

But, Knibbs out on the wing where he struggled, and harsh on Elliott and Ehibhatiomhan.

We're overburdened with talent in midfield. But a bit weak up and down both flanks.

I would love to see a long term midfield of Craig, Elliott and Savage controlling us up into the Championship and maybe beyond over the next 5 years.

Agreed, however, Wing is only 29 i believe so still a few years left and he is arguably our best midfielder plus with Dai still at the club i fear all three will be cherry picked in January

Looks like Hudderfield are in need some charity as their 2-0 home defeat to Blackpool tonight has rather splatted their bright start. Now who can they call on :? (and it's not Ghostbusters).

I’m taking the nippers to their first ever Royals match this Saturday (poor bloody buggers), so I’m hoping for a really positive reaction from the players please. A cracking atmosphere wouldn’t go amiss either.

We need any potential buyers to see what "Reading FC" has to offer and that its worth negotiating with Dai however painful that maybe to get a deal over the line!!!
let's keep any protests within the rules yet effective (whatever that may be) as not to distract the players from the jobs!!!
We are live in front of the nation so what better way to get our point across :D

Hudds have lost 3 of their last 4. We've lost the last 2.

As their only win was a 4-0 at Bolton, where we've just been done 5-2, would take a brave man to bet on us winning given the current feeling around the club.

Well they lost again at home last night to Blackpool (rearranged International break game) so given 2 home defeats in 4 days to sides not expected to be top 6 we can get something I reckon.

Long journey too for an early KO after a mid week game....

I always think a mark of how good your season is likely to be is how quickly you can manage back to back to back wins.

Sadly, we're more likely to do the equivalent for losses.

Which probably tells you everything you need to know about our state.

Will drag myself along to this. Last game I watched was Wigan when everything seemed to be coming right with the world as far as Reading were concerned

No real opinions on the side, just hope we can compete and get something

I think we're looking at a somewhat smaller crowd than the previous two games (looking at home fans) - probably around 600 fewer sold compared to both Charlton and Leyton Orient the night before and around 100 less than Wigan. The early kick-off time will be a factor, especially with kids playing football.

We'll maybe will end up being around 11,000 home fans instead of the 12,000 to 12,500 from the first three games this season.

Very poor crowd, hardly surprising being on telly and potential disruption.

Surprised Selles has stuck with the midfield, it was rather lacklustre.
