Sky Sports say that the FA are in talks with Thomas Tuchel over the England job. This is excellent.

Absolutely. Best England could get, IMO, without Guardiola or Klopp being available. Real shame that English/British managers just aren't in the same league as the aforementioned, but it seems clubs shamefully just aren't willing to give them some time to learn their craft when they can get some bloke off the continent ( ), and you need quality management to go that extra yard or two in tournaments.

Presuming a deal gets done, it'll be interesting to see if he can resolve the usual issue of defensive frailties without sacrificing England's strengths in midfield and attack.

The defenders he's got at his disposal are what they are.

I'm more concerned he works out how to get the full potential out of a front 5 or 6 where we appear to have such riches available, but have actually underperformed massively for the most part of late.

Are the fans still going to sing "ten German bombers"?

No international side has ever won a World Cup with a foreign manager, and I think only Greece have done it in the Euros. Personally I think a Tuchel appointment will end in tears.

I think its would have ended in tears for all available English candidates too tbh.

It's happening.

FA to hold news conference at Wembley today at 1.30pm and Lee Carsley will stay on for the final two Nations League matches in November

Plus the media's tedious "German references" have already started

Excellent appointment and, if he is successful, will hopefully see the end of idiots singing songs from a war that even their grandparents may not have lived through.

On the radio earlier they were discussing how the media in Germany were reporting the appointment and they "feel proud that England have decided upon a German manager" - a bit of a contrast

The Daily Hate Mail have a back page spread with the headline "A Dark Day for English Football". Colour me suprised.

Popping in.

Southgate's spell was successful relative to practically everything because he did a solid job of changing the culture around the squad. Maybe the last tournament was a step too long in the job (but also pick Grealish and Coady, m8), but a losing final is still better than every other tournament I've watched up to him being managed.

Tuchel strikes me as someone who will take a similar approach, looking at the off-field aspects as much as the on.

ALSO expect a fake sheikh sting within 6 months.

There were some dodgy rumours around the final days of his Chelsea tenure, more of a Sven nature than anything otherwise untoward.

Anyway, the best that the FA could get and we will see over the next 18 months whether it has been the manager who couldn't get the best out of supposedly top players or that the players are simply overhyped.

IMHO we have some very good midfielders/ attackers , possibly good enough to win a World Cup but the defence remains the real problem to solve and I don't see too many in the Premier League looking good enough for the upcoming World Cup.

I am trying to work out my 'favourite' bit of the Mail here. What I've seen of the Jeff Powell article is spectacular.

Proper nomadic playing career he had. Loved the NW apart from spells at Yeovil and Forest Green. Interestingly* Tuchel took him to Bayern as the set-piece coach.

Does that mean we can hope to see some decent set pieces again?

For the record Barry is more experienced in international level management than Tuchel :o  :?

Saw Tuchel interviewed on Sky News earlier.
Exceptional command of the English language and far better than most of England's players.
