SCIAG XI of "not necessarily terrible but didn't deliver on huge reputations"

Mihalyov (or Mannone)

Gunter
Oxford
Keown
Rahman

Drenthe (c)
Drinkwater
Guthrie
John

Pogrebnyak
Puscas

Subs: Grabban, Vydra, Martin, Sharp, Baldock, Aluko, Piazon, Halilovic, A. Ferdinand, Ilori, Bridge, L. Ferdinand

Could add a bunch of loanees who barely got on the pitch, most of whom I'm probably forgetting.

Slightly harsh to include Bridge and A. Ferdinand who were obviously quality but permacrocked. Lots of competition for the striker spots.

Gunter? Really? He never set the world alight but he made over 300 appearances for us in 8 years. I think he achieved exactly what he was advertised as, a solid Chump RB.

He was advertised as a leading Championship RB ready to step up to the PL.

The gap between him and Nathan Clyne, who Southampton signed for a very similar fee, was enormous.

The only other option who came to mind was Rosenior, who was a similar quality of player signed in similar circumstances, who did better in the top flight but didn't last as long following relegation. Or Halford, who we paid a similar amount for but was less heralded and didn't play much.

I get it, and while he wasn't on Clyne's level, and never got established in the prem, it still feels harsh to include him in the 11 with those others! But as you say, who else goes at RB? Shame.

I actually think Yiadom has been more disappointing than Gunter but yeah, he was never hyped up as much as Gunter.

I broadly agree - he's the clear odd-one-out as he had a good (if underwhelming) career with us. Saw off Stephen Kelly, Chris Baird and Leandro Bacuna. Maybe Halford is the better fit - or even Bacuna, who I've only just thought of. Actually, yeah, it should be Bacuna.

Given Yiadom was a free transfer from a relegated side, and has mostly seemed dependable when fit, I can't really be disappointed by him.

I'm fairly young, so I haven't seen a lot of truly awful players. It's hard to differentiate expectation, hype and relative ability from actual ability - players we had in the Premier League should have been better players than those we've had in League One for example.

Additionally, I'm avoiding putting any of our youth players who came into the first team into this side as it can simply be down to them not being ready or necessity they came into the side and not because we signed them for the first team.

I'm doing this based on players I saw play in person and based on what they did for us. I may have forgotten someone or how they actually played.

GK - Joao Virginia
RB - Sam Sodje (I know he was a centre-back, but struggling here)
LB - Marcus Williams
CB - Darren O'Dea
CB - Bongani Khumalo
RM - Sone Aluko
LM - Royston Drenthe
CM - Danny Drinkwater
CM - David Meyler
ST - Yakubu
ST - Bas Savage

A couple of notable mentions: Martin Keown; Les Ferdinand

Here goes...

Federici - threw the ball into the net in the cup semi final and made four mistakes in our first week in the prem

Graeme Murty - he was an £800,000 winger when he arrived
Chris Armstrong - nowhere near as good as Shorey
Martin Keown - past it
Geoff Barker - my only memory is his participation in head tennis duals that were very common in the fourth tier of the 1970s

Matejovsky - created more opposition goals than Reading goals and the best passer to invisible forwards I have ever seen
McIntyre - a horrible player who did the thing where you don't bother to look at the ball as it passes you in a play-off final
Drenthe - our worst player ever
Richie Bowman - too small and fair to have a beard (8-year-old Palace fans might think the same about Will Hughes)

Ray Hiron - he wore number 9 in the game after Robin Friday left
Robert Fleck - a symbol of the Tommy Burns era

Chris Armstrong - nowhere near as good as Shorey

While I don't think he's a Reading legend, there's no way I'd ever put him on this sort of list. Player of the season in his first season, then career curtailed due to illness.

Armstrong announced his retirement from the professional game on 8 March 2011 and revealed that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in December 2009.[

I had thought I'd posted this before.

Biggest Disappointments

Or: Just because you're Division 2 doesn't mean you can't be disappointed. I'll put the team name at the end, just so we can all play a guessing game as we go along.

GK: Borislav Mihailov - rumour has it he saw the play off final in '95 and thought that was our home ground. Rumour also had it that he wore a hairpiece.

RB: Greg Halford - came in for big money (over £2 million!), didn't fit, went to Sunderland where he pissed off Roy Keane. There is a story in the secret footballer that rather closely matches his time at my club.

CB: Daniel Carrico - won the UEFA cup while with us. Was on loan at Seville at the time. HIs ... checks notes ... 87 minutes for us ... 87 minutes? Brilliant.

CB: Martin Keown - hindsight possibly puts this as "he was a bit past his best", but defenders are meant to age gracefully, right? He came in as our promotion bid was faltering, we were 4th but struggling for wins. We finished 7th. He played 5 games of a possible 16. Cheers.

LB: Wayne Bridge - defenders are meant to age gracefully, right?

RM: Emerse Fae - close to a club record signing. Got malaria, refused to play in a reserve game. If I have it correct, we never won a single game with him in the side.

CM: Neale Cooper - probably the earliest one here. Remember my Dad saying he'd been a stalwart in Scotland, European success, played with Ferguson, was part of that Graeme Souness Rangers team for a time. All he brought south was the thuggery. Vanished after two months, turned out he went on to play 100 odd times for Dunfermline. Right.

CM: Ray Houghton - and only a few years on from being a regular that Ron Atkinson Villa side of the early nineties and scoring famous world cup goals. I mean, this is a player, this is a man with pedigree. Passed the ball sideways. Pointed a bit. Sad.

LM: Royston Drenthe - I am not even going to dignify how this one worked out with a complete

ST: Pavel Pogrebnyak - I mean, we've shelled out on quality here. Did OK in a struggling relegation season and stuck around the next season. Should have torn the Championship a new hole. Did not.

ST: Mass Sarr - as we moved to our new ground, we brought in what seemed like a new squad. Heading it up was Mass Sarr. Liberian International. Played for Monaco. Scored a lot in Croatia. Someone once made a statue of him but the feet were all wrong. Remember, those heady pre-internet days where rumours were proper rumours? Anyway, the local press all but made up a story about his having a personal witch doctor, he got caught drink driving and scored 3 goals in the old 3rd division.

Subs bench: Anton Ferdinand, Yakubu, Nicky Shorey in 2012 or Dave Kitson in 2009, Danny Guthrie, Tiago Ilori

So there, my Reading FC biggest disappointments. The biggest mismatches between hype/expectation and what we actually got. Some even played quite well at times, but you were always left thinking it could have been so much better.

-----------------------------------------------

As someone else pointed out, there's worse out there. That spell from Stam to Clement eesh, random players coming and going, players that just never were, other players that were falling from grace disgracefully. That squad is very much 'of a certain generation', there's been some deeper shite following.

I have a special list of strikers that have basically scored everywhere else, come here and do eff all.

But linking the two paragraphs there is one Chris Martin. Stam brought him over in January, then got sacked about a month later. Clement came in. Now, you'd look at the spell Clement was at Derby and the goals Martin scored, but also Clement got mysteriously sacked when his side were 5th and there's rumours that someone was boinking someone's wife. There's also the colitis story, which may explain the sometimes intermittent form.

Anyway, Chris Martin. Literally not a single shit given in the games I saw him play.

Still cannot understand how, given the available coaching and scouting staff and the approach to making signings that the club had around 2006, how on earth Emerse Fae was ever found anywhere near the club let alone signed for several million, esp. without an “insurance” signing of someone the club knew would perform if the Fae “opportunity” failed miserably.

Ilori had talent but has never fitted in anywhere and been moved on regularly. He’s now 31 and at Belenenses. His time at Reading is still by far his most productive spell at any of his clubs.

Mass Sarr, didn’t he only get a gig at the club as someone purporting to be George Weah rang Tommy Burns and said to sign him as he was his cousin or something?

Keown”s just put out an autobiography. Wonder if he bothers mentioning any of his time at the club. His son would have been better for the club if he had had the opportunity but sadly he moved to Scotland and has been lost now to injury.

Panas On a slight tangent, I remember standing there at the end of this game just struck by how much I truly hated watching the Stam-into-Clement period: https://royals.org/matdoc/210418.html

It actually looks decent on paper but this and the six months either side of it was excruciating.

Reading: V Mannone, T Blackett, L Moore, C Gunter, T Ilori, J van den Berg (Y Kermorgant, 58), S Aluko (P Clement, 83), J Swift, L Kelly, M Barrow, J Bodvarsson (O Richards, 78).
Subs not used: C Martin, D Edwards, A Rinomhota, A Jaakkola.

Yeah very much. Didn’t like the manager, didn’t like players and knew the owner was getting us into deeper and deeper trouble re FFP

Only players there I look back with any fondness at all for are Gunter, Yann, Swift and Bodvarsson

An awful time that we’re still recovering from

I know I've written about it somewhere, but that season we used 11 players at right midfield.

Fae was, in basketball speak, a losing player - every game he appeared in, we lost for the time he was on the pitch.

As Sutekh implies, we could have got a safer bet from Championship, maybe limited in one or two areas, but not an ABSOLUTE FUCKING LIABILITY.

lol that's Alia Dia and Souness

Mass Sarr had been at Monaco with Wenger, iirc, and had a solid record in minor European leagues. Top scorer for Hadjuk Split, rings a dim bell. EDIT - looked that up, third top scorer in a couple of mid-90s seasons. :x Legit amazed I could look it up tbh.

Head got turned by the bright lights of Reading, Berkshire. Can't blame him.

Maybe many posters are too young but Simon Shepherd between the sticks deserves a statue for his sheer awfulness.

Silly signing, the club could have just bought another striker and stuck the mighty Quinn in goal, probably would have done a whole lot better. Remember him in goal while gubbing that Bolton team 3-2 at Elm Park in 97….

Jack Celliers Here goes...

Federici - threw the ball into the net in the cup semi final and made four mistakes in our first week in the prem

Ray Hiron - he wore number 9 in the game after Robin Friday left

Federici was ever-present when we won the Championship and to put him in based on mistakes in a couple of games (appreciating how important they were) seems to me to be very churlish. Having said that you might just hate him, so whatever.

Including Chris Armstrong is an insult. He was very good in his first season and won player of the year as pointed out by someone else, and was very unlucky with an injury in his second year. To then get the diagnosis of MS, and manage to play a few games whilst dealing with that, was nothing short of miraculous.

I am sure you didn't mean to denigrate him and based on footballing ability alone of course he was a step down from Shorey, but considering what he had to put up with he's a hero in my eyes.

Can we get a best and/or worst XI for JUST players that were loaned to Reading but never signed permanently?

From memory can recall the following names but many obviously get forgotten as they may only get the odd appearance etc.

The dodgy ones:

Nick Colgan
Bongani Khumalo
Josh Sims
Michael Branch
Michael O’Neil
Alfa Semedo
Lewis Gibson
Ola John
Andrew Taylor
Tommy Elphick
Jordon Mutch
Reece Oxford
Chris Martin
Joao Virginia
Ayub Masika
Baba Rahman
Karl Hein
Matej Vydra

The rather better ones:

Jim Leighton
Tommy Wright
Matthew Upson
David Lee
Matt Miazga
Paul Lemon
Emi Martinez
Said Ezatolahi
Nelson Oliveira
Lewis Baker
Jamie Mackie
Nathanial Chalobah
Glenn Murray
Nathan Ake

God knows how many I’ve forgotten.

Interesting to see the players disliked over the years and some of our wildly differing views.
How somebody thought that Richie Bowman makes this worst eleven is beyond me but it's opinions.

Very difficult to make just one eleven but for me I am in for (4-4-2)

Sheppard

Gunter
Kromheer
Michael Barnes (saw him have a nightmare game at Pompey but it did lead to us signing their no.9 ,the mighty Trevor Senior)
Gray

Neale Cooper
Fae
Evers
Saluko

Leworthy or Sarr
Brayson.

but above all others and because how his signing symbolised the dreadful management of our club it has to be Saluko as first pick.

The bunch that came in together in 2018-19

Ovie Ejaria
Lewis Baker
Nélson Oliveira
Emiliano Martínez
Matt Miazga

:P

(That season really is peak-vortex, manager changed in December, half a squad brought in on loan to keep us up, eight arguably first team players left or released over the season, another nine on loan, Gomes sacked before clocks change the next season ... :| )

Older school shit loans

Chris Woods
Steve Blatherwick
Mark Robins
Mark McKeever
Graham Potter - wonder what happened to him??
Leo Roget

why do I think we had Danny Cadamarteri for a bit?

Agree that Mark McKeever was a real disappointment as he had looked so good for Bristol Rovers.
Still, although we might not want to thank that club for him or Gurney we are forever grateful for the original "what a bargain" Jamie and Jason Roberts who had been there previously.
