Sorry yes, not wanted would have been a more accurate statement

Whereas possibly McIntyre aside, we seemed keen to keep the others (though I suppose could argue how keen is debatable)

It’s not even that they ‘weren’t wanted’. Players can chose to move on at the end of their contract, for more money, for more game time, for a tougher test, because they want to live somewhere else, because their family is elsewhere etc etc. If they tell the club they aren’t signing a new deal and leave we can ‘want’ them for ever but we can’t force them to stay. Average turnover at clubs is something like 30% of playing staff each year, it’s a mobile / fluid industry.
There are certainly players you could say we released and got it wrong (Charlie Austin for example) but it’s going to happen and even then we don’t know the whole story behind decisions, It would be interesting to be able to compare our performance in this area with other clubs, we certainly pick up plenty of players for nothing who turn out to be very good players.

Difference there is Laurent aside they were all pretty much released

There’s been others - Dickie, Fosu etc who have done well and played above our level. Other than Laurent and a half hearted attempt to keep Osho, we let all that lot move on

Don’t think many were released, most chose to not accept new deals. We got a decent amount for Antonio.

We got fees for Antonio, Cooper, and Stacey. Osho declined a new contract, not sure if we ultimately got compensation from Luton but don't think so. The only one who was truly released was McCleary, and it's difficult to make the case that was a mistake.

We didn't get a fee for Dom Hyam.

:?: Surely must have got something given the development rules or does that just go out the window if a player is not offered a new deal and released? His loss was Stam’s doing wasn’t it?

Tom Holmes doing well again; Middlesbrough 5-1 Luton Town

Méïté got a 2nd half v Blackburn but didn’t do any good with Cardiff losing 3-1

Saw a bit of the Wrexham game today. Didn't realise that Jon Dadi was with them. Looked pretty classy for this level.

Bodvarsson, 32, has joined the League One side until January on a free transfer after being released by Bolton Wanderers last summer.

Hound With the odd exception (Olise) players really don’t seem to do too well after leaving us do they?

Holmes - sent off last game and mainly benched
McIntyre - has played consistently but Portsmouth bottom
Meite - still gets game time but a horrible goal/assists records since he left us
Rinomhota - career gone nowhere at Cardiff
Swift - done ok but surely not the success he would have hoped for at WBA - seems to be drifting out of relevance there
Abbey - played 58 mins in a cup game for Swansea and that’s it

Been that way for years - going all the way back to when the main players of the class of 05/06 left.

Done well since leaving...

Garath McCleary - becoming a bit of a club legend at Wycombe.
Gabriel Osho - played in the PL with Luton, now at Ligue 1 Auxerre.
Michael Antonio - a very good career in the PL with West Ham.
Jack Cooper - ever present at Millwall.
Jack Stacey - gone on to have a pretty good career, now at Norwich
Josh Laurent - became club captain at Stoke, now at Burnley

Hyam went on to play in Championship. As did Fosu. Loader done ok.
Richards did ok for himself.

You need to offer a new contract on at least equal terms in order to get compensation, which we didn't do. If he'd moved abroad, we'd have got FIFA training compensation, but he didn't.

And yeah, Stam has to take some of the blame there - but we had a lot of good centre-backs queuing up to make their debut so were inevitably going to lose some. Cooper, Keown, Hyam, Dickie, Sammi Fridjonsson, Shaughnessy, Jules, Osho, Axel Andresson, McIntyre, Holmes and Odimayo were all at least League One standard and mostly Championship, and there's only five years age difference between the twelve of them.

Understand why he left, fair enough, but surely a club should cover itself by offering a deal and telling a player he’s likely to be way down the pecking order for a while so if another club enquires we wouldn’t stand in his way of a move. Given the prize numpty we have for an owner then money wouldn’t have been an issue

A bit disappointing to see him go down that far, but it's possible the injuries he had really stunned his development and knocked him down a few levels. It perhaps shows the fine line between making it as a professional and falling into regional non-league.

If money isn't an issue then you can afford to lose him on a free

Of course the potential downside of offering a contract for a player you don't want is that you have an extra wage on the books.

I've noticed it a lot recently. Players I saw particularly recently once or twice who looked like they had something ending up a fair few levels down.

I put it down to two things. First, consistency, I think, you can play well once or twice but can you keep it up for weeks and months.
Second, it's almost certainly me. I want someone like Clarke to make it, so I almost certainly hype that one game I saw him run Blues ragged and forget maybe I saw him four or five other times to no effect.
