MATCHWATCH : Barnsley (a)

by Sutekh » 24 Nov 2024 10:14

When : Tuesday 26th November 2024, 7.45pm
Where : Oakwell, Grove Street, Barnsley, S71 1ET
Capacity 23,009

Reading’s improving away record (now up to the giddy heights of 11th in the away form table  ) gets a second airing in 3 days with exposure at Barnsley for the proverbial winter Tuesday night game that no expensive foreigner is meant to like. Luckily Reading don’t have any of those any more so they might have a chance of further pointage from a thoroughly decent Tykes team.

Chances should be improved further being an away midweek league game against a team beginning with B but it should be remembered that Reading have only won 7 midweek away league trips out of 60 attempts in a decade of trying, and such is the appalling away form of the club in recent seasons that has meant Reading have been unable to manage (or even get a crack at) winning two successive away games since beating Birmingham and then Swansea 3 years ago.

Barnsley are in the play off positions (6th) on goal difference from several clubs, one of whom is Reading, so this should be two very equal sides doing battle. The Tykes brought in 8 players in the summer including Conor Hourihane from Derby and Mansfield striker Davis Keillor-Dunn so this will be a hard game. Their form is very decent with 3 wins and only 1 defeat in the last 6 league games, but that defeat was last time out when struggling Wigan claimed 3 points at Oakwell so expect a Barnsley side determined to put that behind them quickly and get back on track.

Forwards Davis Keillor-Dunn, Max Watters and Steve Humphrys have bagged 10 between them so far but top scorer is midfielder Adam Phillips with 5 so there’s a good selection of options that need to be kept quiet. Reckon on them being handy at set pieces too with defender Marc Roberts netting 3 so far.

Reading have added Mbengue (probable injury and a 5 booking suspension being reached) to the list of those unavailable. After the determined effort in the wind and rain at Peterborough it’s going to be a tough all round ask to produce a performance of similar quality so soon again (esp. with a back line that may well have an average age of around 20 years old) but then that’s why football can be so good.

Whatever happens it will be nice to get back to play a league home game next week after this horrible run of 4 successive away trips.

History

Reading away from home to play that oft quoted, proverbial game always thrown up when some mercurial foreign talent arrives from some hotter clime, got to be a miserable time to be had by all southern softies surely?

Well no actually, it was like that once but it’s not that bad these days.....

This will be the 39th time league action has occurred between the two teams in South Yorkshire and so far Reading have won 11 of the games compared to Barnsley’s 16. Sadly though fate will now be tempted as the bit Reading have to protect is the fact that, since the move to RG2, the club has made this league trip 11 times and obtained 21 points following 5 wins and 6 draws.

How to follow the game
  1. Ticket yourself, be brave and travel
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Can’t recall if rearranged midweek games get the red button treatment or not
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

It'll certainly be interesting to see who covers Mbengue.

Will Dean be fit and step up? That's not a lot of pace in the CBs though.

Does Selles rejig things and bring Garcia in for Amadou, with Dorsett shifting inside and Bindon going to RCB?

Or does he go for a straight swap with Kanu coming in after a solid sub appearance?

I'd probably go with Garcia personally.

The rest of the team picks itself at the moment.

Can't believe we win 2 away in a row.

Kanu has played around an hours worth of football in the first team across 2 games this season and been on the losing side both times. Came off after about 35 minutes at Colchester with the team losing 1-0 and played for about 25 minutes yesterday and lost 1-0 over that period. His last start (at Colchester) saw him being an accident waiting to happen and he should have been sent off 2 minutes before being subbed off. However he did look reasonably OK yesterday so, if he plays, it’s anyone’s guess what we’ll get.

Looked good in preseason, and it was the Craig-Bindon combination for the goal, conceding was nothing to do with Kanu.

Craig being out of position and Bindon weak in the challenge were at fault.

They have an excellent away record and a mediocre home one of 12 points from 8. Maybe we have a chance.

This is somewhere where we don't often do so well, so I will ignore the game again and wait to be pleasantly surprised, just like Saturday.

Quite the opposite....no defeats in last 11 games at Oakwell is quite exceptional particularly given our poor away form of recent years.

Should have watched, it was a cracker.

And you can always turn off if we're stinking the place out.

Actually I think this very much comes under the category of winnable, Barnsley have just two wins in eight at home.

On the minus side though is our beyond appalling midweek away record, but then again they`re a B team.

I`ll take a draw now, but we jump above them potentially into a play-off spot with a win.

Feeling somewhat optimistic about this one, so can't wait to come crashing down to Earth.

Reading last went 3 away league trips without defeat as recently as February  (Oxford, Stevenage and Fleetwood)

Might not have many games left, I'll watch 20 stinkers for 1 cracker for fear of there being no next season.

Another midweek away trip.

3 days after the last game (and an away one as well).

Terrible journey up on the day due to funding issues.

Very young defensive line

Even younger bench.

If we were offered a point right now, I would take it.

There are no funding issues in this respect, the club have been travelling and staying over on away games for most of this year. Wing confirmed they’ll be going up today and staying over in his after match interview with dim on Saturday.

I expected a maximum of two points from these two away games. Having already got three, I feel it's a bit of a free hit. A draw would be a very good result for us.

Sort of, Posh seemed a near certain defeat, but this one does seem pretty winnable.

So L it is.
