Stranded Royals and Racers The Cap
A football special. Bet that proved to be fun and games. How many turned out? Sounds as though the game itself was shite.
I remember going to Everton for a league cup tie (?) in probably late 60’s/ early 70’s on a football special. The thing i remember most was we went all the way there and back on a ‘ rattler ‘- diesel multiple unit !!!
Edit October 1973 we lost 1-0
I remember going on one to Wolves in either the very late 80s/ early 90s. The players travelled on the same train and walked to the stadium with the fans.
I seem to recall we took a very early lead but ended up losing 3 or 4-1 - Branfoot was in charge at the time and personally came down the train apologising to all the fans for the performance but thanking us all for coming.
Only 2 games played at Wolves under Branfoot (both in division 3):
8 Apr 1986 > Wolves 2-3 Reading
3 Sep 1988 > Wolves 2-1 Reading
Would presume it’s the 1988 game as Whitehurst scored after 3 minutes or so and Wolves hit back after HT through Phil Chard (penalty) and Rob Dennison.
