Man Friday Every team except one will lose (only) once in the FA Cup every year so this stat is virtually meaningless.

A more interesting stat is our constant failure to progress. If you gave 1 point for reaching each additional round beyond the one you started in we would surely have the fewest number of points for any club in England.

Trivia question

Which team lost twice in the FA cup in 1999-2000?

So, they will have lost an extra time and were founded in 1883. Did Reading enter directly FA cup from forming? I think it may be a down to a couple of years here.

Bonus trivia question

Which team was knocked out of the League Cup twice the same season (1999-2000)?

(i.e. ignore the individual two-legged games, it's not that)

EDITTED for the dickheads.

Aston Villa in the League cup wasn't it - can't remember who it was but they lost a game to a side who fielded an ineligible player - won the rematch then lost in a later round.

Yes it was West Ham who beat Villa on penalties and were then ordered to replay the game as they played an ineligible player (of course if that'd been a little club they'd likely have been thrown out of the competition rather than just ordered to replay). Villa won the replay aet then finally got beaten by Leicester in the semis.

Manny Omoyinmi

And, bizarrely enough, Villa played Darlington in the FA Cup 3rd round.

Yeah, Barnsley got throw out last season: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/67486563

I went to this game, which had some of the worst refereeing I've ever seen: https://www.gresleyrovers.com/first-team/report/7475

Other than the obvious one ...
On 45 minutes Potts was through on goal but was clearly held back by Liam Mitchell who gave the referee Mr Simpson no option but to show a straight red card.

I was sat next to the lad reviewing the refereeing and he was insistent it could only be a yellow. I dunno. My memory is the player had turned away from goal and was looking for a pass backwards at the time.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but Dunkirk were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player. Gresley were therefore awarded a walkover.

That's in the very first extra preliminary qualifying round, which raises some questions.

Fifa classes losing on penalties is classed as a draw. So i think this stat is a bit more complicated than first suggested.

Most times being knocked out works better.

Tranmere were good then! i.e. when Aldridge was player/manager.
Run of losing play-off semi-finals, league cup final, league cup semi-final, he odd FA cup run.

Plus they were the first really televised users of the long throw - Dave Challinor - to get them there before Rory Delap made it fashionable

Someone's already answered both questions, but Celtic got knocked out of European competitions three times in one season - they got restored to the Champions League qualifiers in 2014-15 after Legia Warsaw fielded an ineligible player (the first leg was changed to a 3-0 Celtic win after the initial 2-0 home loss, allowing Celtic to progress on away goals - after a 4-1 away loss); they got knocked out the next round by Maribor and then were knocked out the Europa League in the first knockout round by Inter.

A couple of years previously (2011-12); they were restored to the Europa League after Sion played ineligible players in both legs of the play-off (they were awarded two 3-0 wins; original matches were 0-0 (H) and 1-3 (A)). They proceeded to get knocked out of the group stage - albeit after the draw had been made; they would've been Pot 2, but Sion were Pot 4.

Reading lost twice in the FA Cup in 2000.

Lost in the 3rd round in January to Plymouth. The following season, lost in the 2nd round to York, in December.

Indeed - it isn’t that rare, but the original (badly worded) question referred to 2000.

Leeds in the champions league, 1992-93, had VfB Stuttgart use too many foreign players.

Had a look at that one - seems there needed to be a play-off. Stuttgart won the first leg at home 3-0; Leeds won their home game 4-1 - Stuttgart would've gone through on away goals. The result was changed to 3-0 as a result of playing too many foreign players, so a play-off was held; Leeds won 2-1 in Barcelona.

I imagine there must be other examples in European competition.

I remember that one at the time - there's Leeds Utd fans in the family.

AFCON/CAF qualifying regularly sees 3-0 walkovers, fwiw.

I don't know about that.

Teams like Carlisle, Torquay and York cant have progressed that much. Where we have reached the semi-final almost 100 years ago!

Actually, York did reach the semi-final in 1955 - and took Newcastle to a replay.
