WestYorksRoyal Have fans got worse, or are we just getting older? I remember us singing songs about northerners beating their wives as a teenager or calling everywhere a shit hole or singing at Brighton fans about their boyfriends in the 00s. I thought that was just what happened and would even get caught up in it sometimes.
I don't particularly feel proud about it with the benefit of hindsight, but it's always been there. Perhaps though we should expect better from fans now. During the era I mentioned Little Britain was our most popular comedy, and thankfully we've moved beyond that now.

I very much think it's a case of getting older. Forgetting any anti Northern or any other anti whoever feelings, football chanting is now just very dull imo. When did you last hear a funny original chant? Its so formulaic. You know what's going to be sung before it happens and you know the reply.
I never used to find it dull or formulaic though I'm sure it's always been thus. So I reckon it's just getting old and having seen and heard it all before.

stealthpapes the worse bit about RFC chants is that the rampant coke use means they're all sang 10-20% faster than they need to be.
Sutekh Not fussed by any chant other than the sick cr@p that the retarded elements of ManU and Liverpool fans throw at each other about Hillsborough and Munich. Same goes for the retards of any club with chants in a similar vein.

Funny that I was going to say similar. At Wycombe, it wasn't just the speed of songs, it was the speed at which they got through a whole series of chants. E.g. 15 seconds on "Blue army", then switch to "Noel Hunt's barmy army" for 15 seconds, then 15 seconds on "Shall we sing a song for you".
It was so chaotic, and hard to keep up with. Someone needs to remind the fans the game lasts for 90 minutes - chill out.Sutekh Not fussed by any chant other than the sick cr@p that the retarded elements of ManU and Liverpool fans throw at each other about Hillsborough and Munich. Completely agree about tragedy chanting. My pet hate is fans online complaining like: "Typical liverpool fans", when it's not about the fanbase at all - it's 5-10ish horrible digusting animals, and the same sorts will be at the opposing fixture.
My other pet hate is Reading fans either singing "Shall we sing a song for you", within the first minute of the game - or when we finally score and we've been silent all game.

Please god no. I remember Arsenal sang this at an away game - possibly Bournemouth - last season and the chant went on for about 20 minutes. It made watching the game extremely hard. The next day even TalkSport mentioned it, especially as it got stuck in your head after.

I've been going since the mid 1980's and I still don't understand why Reading fans sing the Molly Malone song....
Can anyone educate me?
Is it a modern drug reference?...

I agree I don't see many funny or original chants these days. The likes of "Rufus is a dog's name" aren't particularly frequent. But it's probably just a function of going to more games. The first time I sung "is there a firedrill?" away I thought it was hilarious, but now there's nothing original about it.
tidus_mi2Sutekh Whatever happened to Bill Oddie?
Has the Bill Oddie chant ever been the same since he was invited to the SCL and said he supported United?

Our fans can barely maintain a chant for 20 seconds

tidus_mi2 I did think it was funny chanting "Is there a fire drill?" when some sort of alarm did start going off.
