MATCHWATCH : Walsall (a)

by Sutekh » 08 Dec 2024 11:19

When : Tuesday December 10 2024, 7pm
Where : Poundland Bescot Stadium, Bescot Crescent, Walsall, WS1 4SA
Capacity : 11,300

Walsall next in the Trophy.

Walsall may be division 4/league 2 leaders but their trophy team is obviously a little different from their league sides so that measurement can probably be largely forgotten. They qualified from their group after games with Birmingham, Fulham u21 and Shrewsbury, managing to finish top to set up this fixture in the first knock out round of this year’s tournament.

The most well known player on the current Walsall books is Albert Adomah, who will be playing his last game as a 36 year old if he features for the Saddlers.

As usual expect a largely academy team to take to the field on the night as I’d presume Noel will see the league as being by far the most important competition so the majority of first teamers will be saved for next weekend’s clash with Blackpool.

Game must be settled on the night, there will be a penalty shoot out to decide things if it’s all square at 90 minutes.

Referee

Steven Copeland

Pretty much this but don't we have to field 4 eligible outfield players?

Would leave Knibbs out completely as he's carrying an injury.

Think we should win this if they play a second string side as they did last week in the cup V Charlton and lost 4-0.

Unless the rules changed from earlier, its 3 eligible, and I think it can include the goalie but not sure.

The outfield qualifying players for this one (including anyone who's injured); players in grey are duplicates:
  1. Started 40+ senior matches (11): Yiadom (485); Dean (474); Wing (236); Smith (203); Knibbs (152); Dorsett (86); Mbengue (75); Bindon (66); Savage (56); Ehibhatiomhan (45); Craig (41)
  2. On loan from a Premier League or EFL Cat 1 academy (1): Campbell
  3. Top ten most starts (all comps) this season (1): Wing (21); Elliott (20); Bindon (19); Craig (18); Mbengue (18); Savage (15); Smith (15); Knibbs (14); Campbell (13); Ehibhatiomhan (12)
  4. Started the previous match (0): Craig; Bindon; Mbengue; Dorsett; Wing; Savage; Elliott; Campbell; Knibbs; Smith
Overall (13): Bindon; Campbell; Craig; Dean; Dorsett; Ehibhatiomhan; Elliott; Knibbs; Mbengue; Savage; Smith; Wing; Yiadom

Obviously Ehibhatiomhan and Yiadom are injured, so we need to select four outfield players from the eleven listed.

Craig now meets the forty match start threshold, although he'd qualify anyway via starting the last match and being in our top ten outfield starts this season.

Chem Campbell (38) and Ben Elliott (36) are close to reaching the forty match started threshold - both qualify via the top ten starts and starting the previous match criteria. Campbell additionally qualifies as a Premier League loanee.

I would guess the team would be something along the lines of:
Button
Ahmed - Dean - Holzman - Garcia
Elliott - Spencer - Savage
Camara - Wareham - Campbell
One point we don't know is who Noel Hunt may play who Ruben Selles wouldn't; he may favour certain younger players differently. We obviously don't know about fitness either.

Think we could see a similar team to the one that beat Newport, Wing just seems to have the stamina to play every game and if we do put that sort of team out I would expect us to win.

The club used Michael Stickland for their matchday image - usually a sign that player’s starting.

Not necessarily, they did a whole interview with him before the u21s played Ajax, then he was benched for Harlee Dean!

Also that team only has three qualifying players - so one non-qualifying player would have to start on Saturday to avoid some sort of penalty.

Think we're ok - Craig, Savage and Camara played Sat and Dean qualifies too.

I thought Osho was a LB... Garcia maybe further forward, or am I wrong?

Has to be starters from the previous or next game according to Wikipedia.

You need four qualifying outfielders according to Wiki.

I think Wiki is wrong then, because we've had the details posted with previous games and it also includes players who've started a certain amount of games this season, and players with over a certain amount of caps in their career.

Wiki is a terrible source for this.
