Mystery 1981 Home shirt - Any help would be appreciated.

by OSCA-Football » 03 Apr 2025 12:00

Hi everyone,

I recently came into a great lot of Reading shirts, some crackers in there, 80's, 90's, 00's. Some very rare shirts.

One of them in particular though is a bit of a mystery. It appears to be the original 1981 home shirt. However, it has both a branded logo and tag of OSCA, a football shirt manufacturer from the 80's. (See pics below)

The Reading 1981 to 1983 home & away shirts officially had no brand at all. A manufacturer of course but no brand. The original owner has no doubt he bought it in the club shop, even describing what it was like back then. Every other shirt in the collection there is no doubt about, many of them also from the 80's.

I've checked with a couple of big shirt collectors, one of Reading match worn shirts specifically who says he has seen one other before, he also said that the embroidered club crest is bang on exactly the same as even his match worn 1981 home player shirt. He has no doubt it's legit but can't explain why the OSCA logo & tags appear on the shirt but as I said, he says he's seen one other before, meaning the shirt I have is not the only one.

The other collector I contacted is a huge collector of UK shirts from the 70's, 80', 90's. He even wrote a book about collecting shirts called "The Shirt Hunter". He's never seen one before but also says it's definitely legit. OSCA was a manufacturer for lower league clubs from 1980 to 1987, almost exclusively for London clubs. The badge & tags match OSCA shirts from the time.

He also said that it was a bit like the wild west in the 70's, 80's especially for lower league clubs and he's aware that small batches and one of shirts exist for quite a few clubs, so perhaps that seems to be the case here.

The most reasonable explanation I can come up with is that perhaps Reading in the summer of 81 produced a very small batch of shirts with OSCA with the option of then going with them for mass production. After the small batch was made for whatever reason perhaps price decided not to go with them.

Then since every bit of money was important back then decided to sell the shirts in the club shop first come, first serve, to recoup as much money as possible, maybe even make some profit off them. They may have given some of the shirts away as well. After that when they were mass produced for the following seasons they were unbranded.

If anyone knows of any others, has seen one, can remember them, even has one themselves, let me know. Programmes from the beginning of 1981 may have photos in them with fans wearing them or even promotional shots of people wearing them. I can't even find a single pic anywhere on the internet of another 1981 fan replica home shirt (branded or not). The only pics out there are of players wearing the shirts in team photos and from the games themselves.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Cor! That’s a beauty!

How did you come into the collection, if you don’t mind me asking? And what’s your plans for it?

I’ve seen a similar era shirt on eBay (without the OSCA logo) going for about £600. Which I did consider buying but they only end up in the back of a cupboard.

Quick eBay and it’s this one, which must be the one before yours. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/176825851922 ... media=COPY

What other interesting shirts are in the collection? Wrong forum and KFOAE as I’m sure someone will point shortly :?

Thanks for the reply.

I also have the 1984 Home shirt made by Patrick, 1987 away, 1989 Home & away, a bunch of 90's too including the 91 away made by match winner and also the very rare 92 3rd shirt, the red & yellow one.

I didn't know where to post it, I thought anywhere else on the forum would be inappropriate as it's not an ad so I thought classified would be wrong as well as the main team section, rumours, gossip.

Just wanted info from Reading supporters that may help. Seems it's a very rare shirt. Just thought there may have been a chance someone else had one and could compare pics.

I'm okay with removing the post, is there anywhere it would be appropriate on the forum at all. It is Reading related after all and I'm not selling it, at least on here, just genuinely looking for Reading supporters opinions.

Thanks again for the reply
Kind Regards

I have this exact top, can remember purchasing it from the club shop which was then on Norfolk Road in 1983. I believe it was the first season exact replicas were made available. Its kind of a nylon material and very uncomfortable, certainly for running around in!

I think we played in this kit for 2 seasons 1981-83 in the days of Kerry Dixon & Laurie Sanchez. The following season we moved to sky blue for a few seasons.

Just had a look at The Tilehurst End "History of Reading FC Badges" and it says the Three Elm Trees and Two Rivers was introduced in 1981 and only lasted two seasons. At least that narrows the date down, but does nothing to solve the other quesion, though.

My identical top seems to follow the same path as the original poster ie purchased in the club shop.

The Osca logo is not in any match action photos I can see from 1981-83 when we were playing in this kit.....something even more intriguing is the official squad photo from 1981-82 (as in heaven on earth book) has us in a completely different kit.

I actually contacted an author on facebook who's book " The Shirt Hunter" is specifically about collecting shirts of UK teams from the 70's, 80, & 90's.

He said back then it was not uncommon that clubs, especially in the lower leagues would have one off shirts, small runs of shirts, versions with many different sponsors. He said it was to quote him "A bit like the wild west".

As a result there's shirts like this that pop up. I know there's more than one out there as I've had that confirmed by multiple people so at least a small batch of these were made and were available at some point from the club shop.

OSCA the brand only made shirts from 1980 to 1987. All the teams they made shirts for were in and around London, Derby being the only exception. It would be great to find someone who worked there at the time, they'll still be around no doubt as they would probably only be in their 60's, 70's now.

All I know for sure really is that it's an exceptionally rare shirt.

Notwithstanding that today, the hoops wouldn't allowed around the back of the shirt, that is a great kit!

No reason why shirts sold to fans can't have hoops all the way round, not sure it would make economical sense catering for those who want it and those who want an exact replica, especially with name and number sales as well.
