Royals target Ghana ace Mon, Apr 24 2006 14:36

Reading are keen on Rennes defender John Mensah who has now signed from Chievo after a successful loan spell at the French club.
Steve Coppell has been monitoring the situation in France and will want to move quickly as the 23-year-old Ghana international has been in excellent form for the Breton club and will attract plenty of interest in the summer if he plays well for his country in the World Cup finals.
Mensah, nicknamed "The Rock" because of his physical stature and defensive reliability has been compared to Marcel Desailly and has signed a three-year deal at Rennes following a six-month loan period.

Reading, looking to bolster their squad for a crack at the Premiership, have identified Mensah as one of their prime targets and may find it easier to negotiate for the player after he signed a permanent deal with the French club.

Chievo captured Mensah from Modena in 2004 but were happy to allow the centre-back to join Rennes after he fell out of favour at the Serie A club.

Why would he want to move after just signing a 3 yr deal?

Won't happen but thanks for posting.

First African Nations' Cup player seen on here for a while.

I knew we'd be linked with a few up and coming African talents.

By the way, Mensah is great on Football Manager!

That's why one of my mates says that Rooney is overrated and that Billy Jones should play for England.

Nuff said

To be fair to football manager they are often right with players.

Saviola, kallstrom, aimar, riquelme, ronaldinho were all player's who were good on the game years before they came to the knowledge of fans like us. Whilst you shouldn't base your knowledge on what they say entirely....they are often right about potentially good players.

Last I heard he was playing for Stevenage, so I very much doubt it was him!

23 year old centre back that is going to shine in the world cup, is like Marcel Desially, and is nicknamed the 'Rock' for his defnding abilities.
Seems pretty good so far!

Have to say that Mensah sounds like a classic Coppell intelligent signing...

I actually saw Mensah play earlier this season when he was on loan at Cremonese. He was by far and away their best player, good in the air, quite pacey and physically strong.

However saying that he was their best player is not exaclty a major complement, as a quick glance at the Serie B table will tell you.

NOTW said Pompey are also interested.

To be fair to the guy who just had his thread locked - I couldn't find this one either when I checked.

He has apparently been very good for Rennes this season, and could be a Wigan/Chimbonda type signing. I don't think anyone in France would have predicted this time last year that Chimbonda would be in the French World Cup squad.

Looked good against Italy.

Price has probably gone up.

Wages could be a problem.
