Row Z Royal Adie Williams is a w@nker

Where did that come from ?

He told me oxf*rd oxf*rd off when I asked him for his autograph. I got everybody else at the nearly-promoted party at the Town Hall, but he didn't do it. I was only ten and it made me sad.

Jay NOTW say £4.2m bid made and player aware and welcomes interest from Premier League. I just don't see us spending that sort of money on one player when we're bitching over paying arguably our best player 18k a week. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised!

Glen Little wants 18k a week?

May have to. One big name and a couple of Kevin Doyles may have to be the way forward.

Ghana international John Mensah has claimed that Reading have made a bid to Rennes for his services.

The 23-year-old stopper enjoyed an excellent World Cup campaign for the Black Stars, with a series of powerful displays attracting attention from The Premiership.

Reading are eager to add to their ranks as they prepare for life in the top flight for the first time and it is Mensah who is believed to top their wish-list.

Reports have suggested it would take in the region of £4 million for Rennes to allow the player's sale, with Mensah conceding he is weighing up a move to The Royals.

''I am aware of this offer,'' he told the News of the World.

''It's always interesting to be contacted by a Premiership club. We will see.''

Meanwhile, key midfielder Steve Sidwell insists he would like to stay at Reading, despite having held talks with Charlton.

Manchester City are also thought to be monitoring the situation but Sidwell is hoping Reading can match the terms he has been offered to move to The Valley.

Royals target Ghana ace Mon, Apr 24 2006 14:36

Reading are keen on Rennes defender John Mensah who has now signed from Chievo after a successful loan spell at the French club.
Steve Coppell has been monitoring the situation in France and will want to move quickly as the 23-year-old Ghana international has been in excellent form for the Breton club and will attract plenty of interest in the summer if he plays well for his country in the World Cup finals.
Mensah, nicknamed "The Rock" because of his physical stature and defensive reliability has been compared to Marcel Desailly and has signed a three-year deal at Rennes following a six-month loan period.

Reading, looking to bolster their squad for a crack at the Premiership, have identified Mensah as one of their prime targets and may find it easier to negotiate for the player after he signed a permanent deal with the French club.

Chievo captured Mensah from Modena in 2004 but were happy to allow the centre-back to join Rennes after he fell out of favour at the Serie A club.

Why would he want to move after just signing a 3 yr deal?

Won't happen but thanks for posting.

in the paper today there is a article saying that mensah has said he would be interest in signing for a premiership club and reading have offered 4.2 million. he has also said we will see. so there is quite a good possibility that he could come to us.

It was widely rumoured at the time of promotion that the budget would be £8m to buy 3 or 4 players.

To be fair, this is a rumour with no substance

Except that it was told to me by one of the coaching staff in the hotel post Leicester game. Still no real substance I know but better than most of the rubbish on here

It's always been known that we set a budget each year but if the right player is available at the right price we will still go get them. I do not expect that to be different this year.

If we really are prepared to spend £4m on a defender, how about doubling our options and making a similar bid for Curtis Davies? West Brom have resisted the temptation to sell so far but £4m is a lot of money.

Sadly he is coveted by bigger clubs than us. All an accepted bid from us would do would alert these clubs how much it will cost them and he would end up goig there.

Robson has already said he won't sell him at any price, they'd just laugh off a bid of £4m. He's destined for bigger and better things than RFC, a great talent.

The rumours keep getting stronger - looks like a bid for Mensah has been made!!! From todays post

Reading are hoping to clinch the double signing of John Mensah and Dean Whitehead with a joint £5million bid, writes Nick Ive.

I understand Royals manager Steve Coppell has lodged a club record £3.5m bid for central defender Mensah and also offered £1.2m for midfielder Whitehead.

Mensah’s club Rennes, who have only just signed the 23-year-old from Italian side Chievo for £1.85m following a successful loan spell, are considering the offer.

However, the Black Cats have turned down Royals’ initial offer for Whitehead.

Coppell is now likely to go back with an improved bid for the 24-year-old and Sunderland could find a bid in the region of £2m too good to turn down as they plan for life in the Championship.

The Black Cats are currently in the process of being taken over by a consortium led by former player Niall Quinn, who will officially be named chairman of the fallen giants in 21 days after a consulatation period.

The North East club, who finished rock-bottom of the Premiership with just 15 points, are currently managerless following the sacking of Mick McCarthy.

Portsmouth and Fulham are also interested in Whitehead, who was named Black Cats’ player of the year last season

The Oxford-born player started his career with his hometown club before making the switch to the Stadium of Light in a £175,000 deal.

Mensah starred for Ghana in their recent World Cup campaign.

As we reported yesterday the powerhouse central defender, who is dubbed the Rock of Gibraltar, is said to be “interested” in a move to the Premiership.

But Watford, Portsmouth and Charlton are all thought to be watching the situation closely.

Hmm - another potential stumbling block on Mensah is that he signed a 3 year contract with Rennes - on 24 April 2006 - according to the Rennes website........
