RFCSinceBury1971 R-E-A-D-I-N-G Reading are the team for me, la la la.

That was exactly what I was going to write. (But there should be a pause between A and D, and then nine "la"s.)

Surely the "Charlie Hurley's blue and white army" chant didn't come into existence until about 1975, by the way?

Thats what I can remember. Seems so long ago now. Charlie Hurley became our manager in 1972 I think. Correct me if im wrong.

I remeber us singing:

You're so bad you sank at Aldershot!

Aldershot actually were a credible rival at one time!

I was a kid at that time and I thought the fans were singing:

You're so bad your savaloosho!! (Whatever that was, didn't make any sense)

You're right about 1972, but I reckon the chant took a while longer.

Yep, I think so. It was certainly going in 1976 when I started. I was about to post it as my first chant.

I first went when I was about 5 but didn't chant then.

'Uwe, Uwe Uwe......' was always a personal favourite because Hartenberger was a bit of a cult hero to me and my mates at the time.

'Mark McGhee is magic....' sticks out in the mind too.

not quite the first, but one I remember laughing at for ages:

The Southbank - "We wish you a merry christmas, we wish you a merry christmas, we wish you a merry christmas, and a happy new year"
<pause very, very briefly whilst opposing fans applaud the 'sincerity'>
"FUC* OFF!"

We'll give you a wave on match of the day

Feed the Millwall let them know its Xmas time

All time favourite :

Lighting a fire on the southbank and singing the dutch anthem

(t'was much cheaper and safer ? than buying flares !)

First time I can remember a football crowd singing, Wembley '88

We love you Reading we do
Oh Reading we love you

Effective, accurate if unimaginative.

Sorry to post so late on this subject, but it takes me a while to get around
these days so i am often late.

"after the war" back in the forties and fifties ,
when "the south bank" was "under the clock"
the club announcer would start the crowd off by saying "how are my friends "under the clock"
that would start the crowd off singing

"2-4-6-8 who do we apreciate R-E-A-D-I-N-G

(IN UNISON) READING

goodness me is it 2006 already..must rush

hope this brought back some memories for some of the older fans who sang "COME ON YOU BISCUITS" and i hope it brought back memories
of last nights VINDALOO for all you other plastics

1995, Bolton at home, front of the South Bank, a little kid pipes up just after Nogs put us 2-1 up in the last minute:

JIM AND MICKS BARMY ARMY!!

As a 13 year old I was slightly overawed at my new found chant-starting talents. Ain't no stopping me now

When Martin 'icks
goes up
to get the FA Cup
We'll be there
We'll be there....

...it was almost certainly sung with "Simod" instead of "FA" in 1988!!

2 4 6 8 who do we appreciate? READING clap clap clap

I remember standing behind the goal at the Town end and turning to the bloke next to me and saying "Rubbish game" but he couldn't hear me. He was too far away.

Mrs BDC and I used to stand under the clock singing "We're the left side, we're the left side, we're the left side of the bank" and we could sit down on the concrete at half time and still be able to see the pitch.

I'm glad we are in the Premiership; those days are long, long gone 8)
