Stat confirmation

by Alan Titchmarsh » 25 Aug 2006 09:47

Heard it said on BFM this morning that tomorrow's Wigan v Reading game will be the first time that 2 clubs in the Premiership will have played each other in all 4 divisions.

We 1st played Wigan in Tier 4 in 1978, in Tier 3 in 1982, in Tier 2 in 2003 and in Tier 1 in 2006

Is anyone able to confirm this rather obscure piece of errata?

I don't think you mean "errata" - this is a list of errors. I think what you meant to put was "factoid".

All the more remarkable given that Wigan are one of the league's newest clubs.

Although before the seventies I believe, we had 1, 2 and 3 North and South, so it would have been almost impossible for all clubs to have played each other in the same leagues.

Don't think Reading played Wigan in the old 4th Division or League 2 now.

Almost 3-0 defeat at their place.

Wigan Athletic were founded in 1932 as the fifth football club in the town - Wigan County, Wigan United, Wigan Town and Wigan Borough had all previously folded. Forty-six years later, after 34 unsuccessful attempts, Wigan were elected to the Football League, ousting Southport by 29 votes to 20. Their first match as a league club ended in a 0-0 draw against Hereford at Edgar Street.

There you go......................

1978

When we play Watford we will beat the Wigan record as we would have played them in all 4 tiers of English football and in Div 3(s).

I thought we might do something similar with Fulham, but we actually never faced them in Div 4.

Just realised we can go one better than that ...

When we play Portsmouth, we will have played them in all 4 tiers, plus Div3(s) plus the original 1920 version of Div 3. We have also met them in the FAC, but sadly not LC, AMC or FMC.

Can feel a bit of research coming on .....
