Maybe I'm out of touch with the *true" value of players but I'd expect a £12m player to at least have some top flight experience.

Woodcote Royal
The Informant

There is a reason that our attendances are awful despite doing well in the league.

Yep, this town is full of glory hunting twats who would sooner head to Wembley in their droves to watch a meaningless cup final than enjoy a successful promotion campaign.

They'd sooner pay to watch a home game against Leeds that was televised and would, therefore, have been available in many local pubs if they themselves didn't have Sky Sports, than turn up the following Tuesday to watch a less glamourous match against Blackburn that couldn't be viewed elsewhere.

As your views so perfectly illustrate, many in this town view anything they lack the capacity to comprehend or appreciate as awful and uninspiring

As others have said, despite spending a small fortune Villa have been nowhere near good enough to make an impact in what has been one of the most competitive Championship seasons I can remember whereas, 4th place "boring" Reading quite clearly have despite the rabid ignorance they have been subjected to by some who see themselves as supporters.

Have no fear, should we get promoted the Mad Stad will be full to overflowing with many of the local whingers complaining they can't get a ticket.

In the case of Ross McCormack, by top flight experience, I don't mean a couple of seasons with Motherwell in the SPL about 10 years ago.

Problem is, idiots like Villa have made a mockery of what the true value of a player is.

Scott Hogan has been absolutely dogshit since he arrived at Villa Park, including yesterday. They paid £10 million for him in January, and the bi-product is the market gets altered accordingly.

Personally, I think Fulham started it all by spaffing £12m on McCormack on the back of 1 decent season for Leeds. It's all fuelled by parachute money. The thing with parachute money is if you're going to spend it in that way, you've got 3 years to get it right or you're sitting on a financial time bomb.

For the money Villa spent on McCormack, Kodjia and Hogan, Newcastle bought Shelvey, Ritchie and Gayle. Newcastle got Diame for less than Villa paid for Tshibola. Different class of player completely.

No surprise Villa are farting about in mid table. They've got another summer of clearouts and rebuilding and one less year to get it right.

It's been crazy for ages. Stupid Money for McCormack, Hogan, Rhodes originally went for a hell of a lot to Blackburn iirc - though at least he's performed. Vydra. Anyone attacking Derby have bought tbh. No Championship team should be spending more than £5-6m on a single player IMO.

Agreed. You don't need to spend that much money - it's pointless. Look at us and Huddersfield - even Leeds haven't spent that much. Us in 2005/6, 2011/12, whenever Burnley have been promoted...

The Championship is all about good scouting and building a team. And investing some money in other areas. If anything, wages usually have a correl8ion to league performance, not transfer spend

Burnley did spent £9m on Andre Gray but that does seem to be the is exception for them.

That top 5 is utterly insane. There's a lot of lols in there.

Reading, Brighton, Leeds, Huddersfield & Wednesday all sitting in the middle of the pack - £9m - £4m and making up 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 7th despite the ludicrous spending from half a dozen or more clubs.

The best part is if you combine their expenditure - £34.5m - it's not even halfway to what Villa have spent by themselves

Is that outlay on players? What about net spend? That would be even more interesting to know and compare with above.

Pretty sure it's just outgoing expenditure, as far as I recall, Newcastle actually made a profit due to selling their better players for high fees.

Wolves are skewed by that Costa purchase for 12m, but the rumours amongst my Wolves colleagues and friends is that there's some pipeline deal in place that he will be sold in the summer for 20m and that there's some collusion going on between owners/clubs with Wolves making 8m as the "middle man". Can't remember who the 20m buying club are though.
