It's not a disastrous record by any stretch

Hendo I want to say someone like Doncaster in the 2006/07?

IIRC Peter Maté scored the winning pen.

Not quite. Mate scored our third goal in regulation time. Our other, more storied loan centre back, Andre Bikey, scored the winning penalty.

As far as I can make out the full record on penalty shoot outs is this:

Won
Lost

  1. Feb 1993 - Exeter City (a) (League Trophy thing) L 4-2
  2. Feb 1998 - Cardiff City (h) (FAC4) W 4-3
  3. Sep 2001 - West Ham (h) (LC2) W 6-5
  4. Jan 2003 - Walsall (h) (FA3) L 4-1
  5. Sep 2006 - Darlington (h) (LC2) W 4-2
  6. Sep 2008 - Stoke City (a) (LC3) L 4-3
  7. Sep 2010 - Northampton (h) (LC2) L 4-2
  8. Aug 2016 - The Franchise thing (h) (LC2) W 4-2
  9. May 2017 - Huddersfield (n) (POF) L 4-3
  10. Aug 2019 - Wycombe (a) (LC1) W 4-2
  11. Sep 2019 - Wolves (a) (LC3) L 4-2
  12. Feb 2020 - Cardiff City (a) (FAC4) W 4-1
  13. Aug 2023 - Ipswich Town (h) (LC2) L 4-1

So Reading have played 13 of the things and won 6, seems to be a record that's pretty much what you'd expect for any team really.

So, if you haven't missed any, looks like we are on a run of win one/lose one over the last 7 shoot-outs - so when we make the play-off final at the end of the season, we better hope it goes to penalties

Unless we have a shoot-out in the FA Cup of course.

Lost to Marlow on pens in last season's BBCSF through some pretty slack shooting - and the Marlow massive shining phone torches at our lads.

Keeps the win one/lose one sequence since 2016 going. Will lose the next one then.

Could get another 3 this season (presuming Reading don't make the play offs of course!)

Bumping this from last season. We're now 7 wins 8 losses after losing 3-4 to Colchester last night.

I think it's eight and nine respectively, as we also beat Charlton (4-2) and lost to Brighton U21s (3-2) on penalties in the Trophy last season. But still as close to a 50-50 record we could get with an odd number of shootouts.
