Dixon was a much better player than Senior - who was basically rubbish but managed to fall over at the right time so the ball hit him and went in.

However he was extremely good it at and I'd rather have lucky players than unlucky ones (plus I'm exaggerating a bit !)

I think there are probably 5 real candidates :

Quinn
Senior
Dixon
Cureton
Doyle

but I'd love to find room for Kevin Bremner and feel guilty at not including Blackman but I never saw him play.

Baines If you've never seen him play - it's a bit tough to pick him.

Kitson for me is easily on a par with Doyle. Rescued us when we were shit, and has a great ability to make thikgs happen. If it hadn't been for his injuries in the last 3 seasons I think he may well have gone to a top prem club by now. Like Spurs, Man U, Liverpool etc etc.

I'm struggling with Robin Friday.

He needs to be in the running, but what position should he be ?

My recollection was he wasn;t really a 'forward' - he was a damn good player who just did whatever he wanted an dplayed whereever he wanted.

Do we need a 'wild card' category ?

Ian - have to say I'm not sure about Kitson. He has had great days but last season he barely did anything (I know he'd been injured...) I suspect I'm going to put him in with Forster, Butler, Lovell and Nogan as great players but not quite the creme de la creme. We have been blessed with som egreat forwards and they can;t all make the cut...

No, we're not having any more categories for players. For what it's worth, some forwards do play a "free role" - I seem to remember this phrase being applied to exceptional players.....

Hence splitting the position into two may have been a good idea

So do some midfielders.

And so do some crap defenders....

I'll add Friday to my official list of candidates then:

Friday
Senior
Dixon
Doyle
Cureton
Quinn

Add 2 joke candidates and you have your list....

I understand that. I do feel he has been crippled by injuries. Maybe I'm noming him for what he did originally and what we could have done last season. Either way he was top scorer 2 out of the last 3 seasons. pretty good going.

Think I'd agree with these and then narrow it down to Senior and Quinn.

As much as I loved Saint Trevor (If the discussion was "name your favourite Reading XI, he would probably be in mine) , I can't see how he can be seen as "greater" than Kerry Dixon who was the Division's top scorer - or thereabouts - in a truly awful, dispirited team who were relegated easily.

Then there's the fact that he (Dixon) performed in the top division and represented England.

Or is the category the "Greatest" player whilst playing for Reading? In which case... I don't know.

I'd hope people consider Robin Friday.

If you're not go and read The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw.

Use of 'end of' immediately means your suggestion is treated with scorn...

Lovell certainly did score loads with Quinn and Nogan, but post '95, he didn't really do much, did he? I will always remember him for the hat-trick against Swindon and the late late show against Wolverhampton.
