I just feel sad that there are human beings in the world who regard their duty to be telling teenagers to sit down in a football stadium of a saturday afternoon.

Whether it is against the law or not, surely there is a case for being lax with regard to a small minority of fans who sincerely would like to stand. Don't forget they've actually paid for a seat.

As long as it is tolerated in a specific area but nowhere else, I really can't see a problem with it.

No you do not as it is against the regulations which you accept by buying a ticket. You said yourself you pay for a seat!

madreadingfan i know everyone has complained about stewards but they have certainly got stricter this year, at half time me and some mates went down the stairs and the steward pulled us all over into this room and gave us a lecture about persistent standing and that we were all on camera, so he told us if he see's us standing again he will send us out, and they told the top 6 rows in y26 the same and seeming john madejski comes out saying he wants a better atmosphere how are we going to get a better atmosphere without being allowed to stand and sing? it is ridicolous, every team in the championship or premiership have a little stand or block where they can stand and sing, but no not for reading a drum only seems good enough for poor old reading  it is a big joke if you want to stand up and sing all match and i know alot of you will complain in this thread by going just sit down and stuff but alot of us would prefer to stand and sing

Not wishing to let facts get in the way of your argument, but........

Number of FAPL grounds where a stand or block is given for Standing = 0. None. Zero
Number of Champtionship grounds where a stand or block is given for Stading = 0. None. Zero

Rules/regulations/laws coming out of The Taylor Report made this the case.

Hope this helps?

Check out Ninian Park and Home Park. That's 2 straight off the top off my head where standing is actually allowed in parts of the ground.

Right i was actually thinking of writing a letter to Reading Football Club after last night..

The whole steward thing doesnt annoy me much but last night, about 4 Sheff Wed Fans ran to the front of their stand, and made several rude and offensive (to some) gestures, INFRONT of stewards.

Why the hell are away and home fans allowed to do this, and the stewards not batter an eye lid, yet the stewards are first in line with storming up to Y25 to tell fans to sit down.

It totally doesn't make sense! And would like an explanation

The stewards were only doing their job - they'll get sacked if they don't.

You need to take your gripe to the Football Licensing Authority and Reading Borough Council, who are the authorities who make Reading FC enforce rules which are virtually unenforceable.

Ninnian Park shuts down at the end of this season, while Plymouth had to convert the remaining bottom of the terrace into all seater having maxed out the 3 year option to keep terracing at Home Park.

Skin Fu ck me there we have some sticklers for the rules at Reading don't we?

The rules are bollocks and we all know it, I find it tedious that they exist and as such don't attend much any more (my new born daughter and the cost also factor  ), but its each to their own and if you can put up with wanting to stand but having to sit fair play. Saying that I will be at the Swansea game and will stand if others around me stand. This season I haven't got a ST to lose so I really won't give a toss.

Though I fully expect to see you at Ashton Gate for a repeat of 2002.

FFS - when are you lot going to learn that the stewards don't have a choice in whether they ask people to sit down or not

As Dirk said:

Whether you are for or against standing, we don't have any right to stand so it is a moot point

Jeez, why the fuss???

Like Trolli said, stand and make some noise, sit back down again. Stand when there's something on the pitch that makes you want/need too (a corner), sit back down.

If you balance the two then you're less likely to get any grief from a steward!!!

According to the Taylor Report, which is where the whole messy situation we have now comes from, it's acceptable (and expected) that supporters "will stand at moments of excitement".

It's "persistent standing" that causes the club legal problems and which they have to be seen to have their stewards enforcing otherwise they lose their safety certificate.

What exactly is defined as "persistent standing" is the moot point here - but clearly standing at moments of non-excitement, and/or standing for long periods of time is likely to get you noticed and get you into trouble.

Maybe, but the policing and stewarding strategy at the vast majority of clubs these days is not to go wading into a crowd to eject or disciple such people - what often happens is that they're watched carefully on CCTV and then as soon as they go to the concourse they're ejected.

Only at a few clubs (for instance Fratton Park and The Riverside. amongst others) - or where the offence is deemed to be particularly serious (e.g. having alcohol in sight of the pitch!) - will stewards/police go wading in heavy handed and risk an escalation of the situation
As an example of this strategy, the first post in this thread says [quote]..... at half time me and some mates went down the stairs and the steward pulled us all over into this room .....[quote]

So maybe these people were dealt with, but you didn't actually see what happened.
