it may seem blinkered but.....

french wine is over priced and pretentious, would much prefer a nice bottle of new world wine anyday

clearly i wouldnt swap our national team for theirs as im english and it would be a bit odd

and the french get all sniffy about cheese as they have a million varieties
but i dont give prizes for quantity, its the quality i like

i think stilton is a better blue cheese than most
i think cheddar/red leicester is lovely for a mild cheese experience for say, a sandwich or melted on top of something
i believe wensleydale and caerphilly are both excellent examples of a creamy, and a crumbly cheese, why go elsewhere for your cheese input.

the vast majority of french cheeses are also over priced and pretentious, and many many look, and smell like poo, and are a little too much of an "aquired" taste for my liking

and what i said about their excellent social care still stands, thats why france is so economically stale

the places i have been have always looked very shabby
their roads are ok, but you have to pay for the motorways etc

but ok, ill concede, france is ok i suppose

Just to add my input in an already crippled thread.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK. The Northern Irish and Irish are (forgive me if I'm wrong) pretty much the same people. Therefore the Irish are local. And indeed are part of the British Isles.

The French are seperated by the Channel, and we haven't had any land in France since we lost Calais in the 1600's(?) under burning mad Mary.

their road signs are in english,as are their newspapers, their modern literature is all written in english, as is their music nowadays

its official in the same way as welsh is probably the official language of wales but is only spoken regularly buy a few backward farmers in some isolated valley or other.

Yes, I've been to Ireland. Many times. Most road signs there are in English in so far as they are in both English and Irish. Some are only in English and some - particularly in the west of Ireland - are only in Irish, but most are in both. There are newspapers, literature and music all still written in Irish. Obviously its a language thats been in decline for many years but its undergoing a revival of sorts recently.

In Wales especially in the north, you will find that Welsh is more widely spoken than just by a few 'backward farmers'.

i was on a wind up, my mums welsh!although of the english speaking variety, and i remain convinced that welsh is a language used only to talk about the english in so they dont understand!


Anyways, my original point was that our language, English, is in some ways more akin or 'local' to French than it is to the celtic language of Irish (and Welsh).

Somebody else posted that we are more 'local' to Brittany than to Ireland. Well, they have their own celtic language in Brittany, too - Breton - which is akin to...Cornish (which also is undergoing a revival of sorts). How's your Cornish?

Republicans - essentially Irish Catholics and in the minority (historically) in the North

Loyalists - essentially Protestant Scots and in the majority in the North.

Two pretty different peoples who ended up in the same place and have fought each other ever since.

If you define 'people' as 'members of the human race' then they are the same, but to assert that the Southern and Northern Irish are 'the same' and therefore all our Southern Irish players are near enough British is a pretty unconvincing arguement...

You could argue that the Scots and (say) the Norwegians are near enough the same, and therefore Norway is 'local' !!

if you asked, most of ireland they would say yes they are, if you asked, a small majority of northern ireland would say no.

Some are. The Ulster Scots, for example. They speak yet another language/dialect, a variety of Lowland Scots. It is spoken in parts of Ulster...which is a province that spans both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland
