Oh well another Mike Bassett "FA grey man", still it's only representative of the quality of English players!

Comparing Roy Hodgson to Mike Bassett is about the daftest thing I've ever heard.

Why wouldn't Terry and Lampard have been the right choices for 2006, or the later tournaments for that matter?

Why were they selected? Because they were our best options in those positions. Beckham was included because the manager saw him as a vital part of the team, which he was at the time. His injury probably should've meant he didn't go, but I don't think outside influences had any part to play in selection.

Edit: Beckhams injury was 2002 not 2006, he was still Sven's darling at that time though.

Lampard, a possession killing skyballer that by 2006, critics were proved right by one of the worst performances at the tournament, and embarassing ever since.

Terry, in the team through attention spanless fan hysteria driven by ‘highlight television’, idiots watching him score a header in a 10 minute summary, but not give the ball away and run through treacle over 90 minutes.

Beckham, with his actually underwhelming tally of assists and goals for someone who takes EVERY SET PIECE AND PENALTY IN EVERY GAME EXCLUSIVELY, paceless, one-dimensional, shape-losing, long-baller who did nothing of note in any tournament apart from vomit, cry and miss penalties.

Lampard lost it in 2005 and Terry and Beckham never had it in the first place. How any of them are still being selected 8 years past their sell-by-date is beyond me, but then they are Franchise Players and I guess that to the FA is what it’s all about these days.

Remember to consider that Terry and Lampard had just been instrumental in winning back to back Premier League titles. Lampard, as usual scoring shed loads of goals. Terry even made the World Cup 'all-star team' too by the way.

I think 4 years probably reflects the need for a stable progession and rebuild to get rid of the remains of the 'golden generation'. One of the factors being touted as key in his appointment was his input on the whole coaching set up etc. There's no point doing that for just a couple of years.

It's also going to be very tough for a European team to excel in Brazil in 2 years time, so perhaps they've agreed the plan is to really build up towards 2016.

I think 4 years probably reflects the need for a stable progession and rebuild to get rid of the remains of the 'golden generation'. One of the factors being touted as key in his appointment was his input on the whole coaching set up etc. There's no point doing that for just a couple of years.

It's also going to be very tough for a European team to excel in Brazil in 2 years time, so perhaps they've agreed the plan is to really build up towards 2016.

Maybe agree an extension if he doesn't fvck up royally in Brazil (or before) but don't give him a contract beyond an obvious point where a massive fail could be achieved

As long as we qualify for Brazil – and a contract goes both ways, Hodgson will have wanted confidence from the FA that he can make a success of the next World Cup – then how can he royally fcuk it up? Unless we’re demanding a semi-final place and samba football already.

The FA have gone for somebody who will have the long term future in mind..
