It would be somewhat ironic if we were to actually beat Birmingham though all things considered.

If Pauno is still in charge for Birmingham though I could imagine it being a very toxic atmosphere.

Enjoyed reading the Green Programme comments ( can’t always say that ) , but Steve Hezke was a CB , not leading the forward line !
The Jack Mansell team had to be seen to be believed , great attacking football , the principal when we had the ball was pass it forward at pace and move forward to receive it . Goals galore . 8 - 0 in the last home game of the season .
Following season , first game the following season was against Man U . Who sent down the full first team in the 1st round of the Watney Cup , we lost 4 - 3 , scared the life out of them . Then believe it or not Mansell upset nearly all the players and they just would no longer put the effort in on the pitch , and the team that had started the season as favourites for promotion got relegated to Div 4 .
Mansell got sacked .
At the time , through various causes I associated with a number of these players .

- It isn't to do with FFP or money issues
- It is not because of good results
- Performances and tactics have been poor
- Poor league position and out of the Cups
- Team morale appears to be low
- He has lost the dressing room
- Opposition haven't been world-beaters
- Injuries have improved so can not longer be used as an excuse
- We've managed to strengthen the team with new players
- Disruptive influences have been shipped out
- Crowds are falling due to performances
- He even allegedly offered to resign

Is it because:

- Trying to find a replacement is taking time
- Chinese pride/stubbornness from the owners

It could be that the owners genuinely believe - or at least are being guided by those that believe - that Pauno will turn things round. That as long as we're not in the relegation zone that it's better to keep a manager who knows the players and the club than getting in someone new. Maybe people are telling them that we've been performing ok in recent games and that it's just a 'matter of time' before we start winning again.

There could also very well be a cultural thing going on with the owners. That it is far less embarrassing for them if Pauno leaves when his contract ends then it is for them to publicly admit that their hiring decision was wrong. I know that we don't see it that way - to us is an embarrassment that they haven't taken action, but maybe this is about having to take personal responsibility for a failure. If we get relegated they can just blame the EFL and 'FFP' - if we fire Pauno they're admitting they were wrong hiring him.

i think most of this thread has been asking those questions. Plenty of educated and uneducated guesses about it all

To be fair, it could also be EFL approval that's been holding up this process. It would also explain why we signed the likes of Andy Carroll and Brandon Barker outside of the transfer window. I know we are within our rights to do that, but I'm sure these are deals that were in the pipeline a while before they happened.

The EFL approval might involve both the sacking of Pauno as well as his replacement and what that means in terms of cost and wages. I can't see why it wouldn't be approved, but there probably are reasons for it taking time for it to do so.

As a measure of the top level thinking/pressure, SJM went on record just several weeks ago suggesting that we stick with Pauno.
