I think that being married to a much younger woman makes a difference and I don't hold out too much hope for you and a long life ahead.
Still, what a way to go.

I've just come back from six months in Australia!!! I'm sure there are other things to do in Geneva, it's just that I haven't really looked.

I give myself another six months!!

This time last season

This time last season we had lost 14 and drawn 8.
This season 6 of those defeats are draws making us six points plus a 20-goal better GD.

(12 points off second place, 11 off 4th, 09 off 6th) NOW
(25 points off second place, 18 off 4th, 11 off 6th) This time last season

League

P32 W10 D14 L08 46-35 +11 GD 44 Points 12th (1.375 ppg equating to a 63 point season) 2010-11
P32 W10 D08 L14 40-49 -09 GD 38 Points 18th (1.188 ppg equating to a 55 point season) 2009-10

The 32nd league game last season was a 5-0 win, making the figures look a sight better.

Our final 14 games last season were: W7 D4 L3 28-14 25 Points

The same run would put us on 69 points. Not enough for the POs. We would need W8 D4 L2 to make 72

Cup (excl penalty shoot-outs)

P4 W3 D1 L0 07-4 2010-11
P6 W3 D2 L1 14-9 2009-10

Combined: Up to and including 32nd League Game (Plus Cup)

P36 W13 D15 L08 53-39 GD +14 ("1.50 points per game" equivalent)
P38 W13 D10 L15 54-58 GD -04 ("1.29 points per game" equivalent)

Team v Sheffield Wednesday 2009-10 Season

Federici, Bertrand, Griffin, Ingimarsson, Khizanishvili, Kebe, Sigurdsson, Tabb, Howard, Church, Rasiak

Subs: Hamer, Pearce, Matejovsky, Robson-Kanu, Henry, Bignall, Thorvaldsson

Long-Pearce-Mills-Karacan to add to those.

2009-10 Up front (Long/Church/Rasiak) we were decent without being spectacular
2010-11 Long having his best season, Church utterly out of form, decent but unspectacular support from Hunt)

I'd say up front we are similar, overall. Goal tally certainly suggests that

Howard and Tabb were playing well, Gylfi was outstanding, an obvious loss this season

Weigh that against this season, Elwood excellent, Karacan better, Tabb at best 90% of then, Howard at best 75% of then)

I'd say two players plus but nobody close to replacing Gylfi

Bertrand was definitely a plus at LB
Griffin was playing very well at RB

Ingi this season, a year older, a long injury, not so good. Kish isn't playing.

Feds is maybe slightly better this year, but we now lose him for a while.

But at least up until 32+6 v 32+4 this year's defence is performing better than last year's.

This season we are conceding almost exactly a goal a game. Last season 1.5 goals per game

I do find it odd that so many are bitching about our goal-scoring when it's

P32 46-35 +11 GD 2010-11 (averaging close to 1-5 For 1.0 against on target for 69-50)

P32 40-49 -09 GD 2009-10

Last season we finished 68-63 GD 5

So ATM we look like equaling or bettering last years Goals-For column, while conceding 15-20 less goals.

So what exactly are we complaining about?

The football was more exciting last season, that is probably why a lot of fans are moaning this season. The football is dull. You take out players who play football on the ground- Bertrand, Zurab and Sig, and the style of football is boring which means the fans aren't as excited. Simples really!

I don't disagree, but the facts are we are scoring (up to no (36 games)) at a HIGHER rate than
last season's first 38 games, and those games included two highly-distorting 5-goal games.
Take those two out and it's scary.

Look a bit harder and we had a 6-0, 5-0, 5-1 and 4-1, 20 goals in 4 games, 15 in 3 league games

Overall, we played 54 games last season 84 goals (1.56), or 46, 64 goals in 50 (1.28)

Forget the cup and we got 68 in 46 (1.48 per game) but 53 in 43 (1.23 goals per game)

So far league wise this season we are 46 in 32 (1.44) Take out 3 4's and we'd be 34 in 29 (1.17)

Point is we ARE scoring as well as last year even when you include the very good finish.

AND WE ARE CONCEDING LESS

I agree on the football, but frankly we CAN play football if we want to. Harte and Griffin can play going forward, Elwood can, McAnuff and Kebe can, Howard/Tabb can, Karacan does occasionally. All it takes is a manager's instruction to NOt keep pumping it long, but to either play a short ball to Elwood or the other midfielder, or use the FBs

Not sure I agree all those can really play a better brand of football, but you're right it comes from above that we need to go out and do it.

Apart from the obvious Gylfi, are we really saying that
last season we had 9 better footballers?

I don't see it. Bertrand was faster and had more energy
but I wouldn't say he was a better ball-player.

And Rasiak? Really?

I wonder whether we really did play better football
or are we deluding ourselves because every now and then
ONE player (Gylfi) did something special?

PS Not as special as Elwood's turn and shot v Watford.

I seem to recall a lot of posts last season that expressed a great desire to have "ugly wins" vs. exciting losses. When it got down to BR giving time to talking about number of passes vs. lack of goals, that was a problem.
