Sheffield United have made a 1.8 million pound bid not Reading - unless we've just done so in the last hour or two.

BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_utd/8132403.stm says Sheffield United made an initial offer 2 weeks ago which was rejected. They then came back with a revised offer of £1.8M which has been accepted.

Sky http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11688_5412530,00.html quotes Watford Chairman Jimmy Russo
We've received a new bid today for Tommy and we will allow him to speak to the club in question
I'm not clear whether the "new bid" means a bid from another club or a revised bid from Sheffield united.

Royal Rebel More cahnce of growin
IMAMATEOFJOVSKY This will be a good measure of our ambition - will Egoman risk a nosebleed by breaking into a 7 figure transfer fee for the incumbent - or will we be feeding off Div 1/2 players for the foreseeable future??????

More chance of growing a 2nd head ! £50,000.00 Thats more like the kind of 7 figure sum we'll spend LOL

Muppets. This club has a set way of doing business. We do not pay over the odds for players who are not worth it. Wouldn't have any other way.

Surely the fact that we roughly broke even on these players shows that we probably had the valuations about right? Where we were wrong was thinking they'd fit our style and culture.

Alternatively: We didn't pay over the odds for players who weren't worth it. We paid the market rate for players who weren't worth it.

I note that Bertrand is a left back. Unless we're planning to sell Armstrong, I just don't see the point.

... Good shout! However further investigations have revealed he is a solid, tasty CB as well and has played there for England so maybe a
replacement for Dubery? :? Who knows but he wouldnt be looking to replace Armstrong anyway so he must have other ideas - who knows?

some people with claimed inside knowledge said he was looking for a replacement for Armstrong. Don't believe that myself, but we'll see.

£1.8 million is far too much money to pay for Smith - 800k would have been a reasonable deal but he's 29 and there are better long term prospects about for that money.
