Maguire If you read this whole thread, people were abusing McDermott from half-time onwards for not bringing on Guthrie (or unspecified other subs).

Here's the thing - if you're 0-0 at half-time away to a rival who have been restricted to half-chances and you've hit the woodwork just before the interval, and none of your players have a yellow card, WHY THE HELL WOULD HE SUB SOMEONE AT HALF-TIME?

No manager would do that, so a stream of posters on here calling him a pcunt, a bald twat, a useless oxf*rd etc just defy belief. It's 48 mins into a 0-0 game and you're all baying for his head ffs. And the person you want brought on as a saviour is Danny Guthrie who's been out injured for cock knows how long. Really?

Oh apart from whoever say "Samuel would be better than Le Fondre in a game like this". What, you mean an actual professional game of league football? yeah of course, would be amazed if he didn't score a hat-trick

Amazing how the answer always lies with whoever isn't on the pitch, isn't it?

My complaint is that McDermott watched us completely surrender initiative, possession and any hope over 15 minutes whilst Saints got more and more dominant and more and more likely to score. You could see it coming a mile off. I don't care who it is, although Guthrie is the most likely candidate, he had to take some action to try and fort up and patch the holes. Instead he did nothing until they scored. As he usually seems to do this season.

If I can see a change is needed or we'll conceed, then as a professional with plenty of experience, so should he.

Trouble is that's usually apparent after 15 minutes of most games.....

Got to admit that is about as spineless and insipid a Reading performance as I have seen for some years.

Southampton were ok, but we made them look far better than that. No pressure on the man with the ball, no attempt even to unsettle with some heavy tackles seeing as we couldn't string 3 passes together.

Was blindingly obvious we were being swamped in midfield yet Mr McDermott appears to have some kind of phobia of mid game tactical changes.

Its not the losing that hurts so much as the way we are losing....and that for me is why today has finally made me cross the floor to the McDermott out camp. The lack of fight from the players really makes you wonder if he has lost the dressing room, and the lack of any meaningful game plan or ideas is beginning to remind me ominously of a certain Mr Bullivant.

At least a change now (even accepting relegation, which for me was always likely) gives a new manager half a season to establish a way of playing ready for next year.

The thing I will remember from this game, before I mercifully forget it, is our best player, Jay Tabb, working his tail off to win possession and then give it right back to the opposition with his first pass. And he was our best player today...

What a complete load of b8llocks. The reason many managers would do exactly that is that, despite the scoreline, one or more players might not be performing well and they want to strengthen the team and push on for the win.

God forbid, he might be forced into changing from 4-4-2!

We could all see that the writing was on the wall at half time(ie we are going to oxf*rd lose) so we
needed to change. Good managers do change at half time when your team has been played of the
Park! The second half was worse. Again bm had no idea what to do. Putting jm in cm is useless. If Guthrie is not fit he should not be on the bench.

The team is awful i am afraid. Championship level performance again as they have been all season

We weren't "played off the park" in the first half.

Agreed. We didn't show up until the 12th minute, but whilst Saints were on top, it was still relatively close first half. Albeit one where Saints should have been ahead with their wrongly disallowed goal. It was only after the first couple of minutes after half time that things went absolutely to shit.

By the numbers;

Possession:
Soton 65%
Reading 35%

Goal attempts:
Soton 18
Reading 6

On target:
Soton 5
Reading 2

Corners:
Soton 7
Reading 4

Offsides:
Soton 2
Reading 4

Goals scored:
Soton 1
reading 0

The numbers after the fact really tell the story yet again...

65/35 possession against a side also playing 4-4-2 says it all tbh
